The US type of 'Orpington' has a different tail angle to the UK Orpingtons this makes the body look longer. (US male 25°, female 15°; UK male & female 45°)
Also the US birds are required to be higher from the ground.
As the European types of Orpington appears to be so much more popular than the US type, I can see a situation arising where, similar to the situation with Marans (French type & British type), there could be a British type & US type.

Krys what you said is true. There is a noticeable difference between the two standards. And in my opinion, there are already two totally different types of ORPS in the world to choose from. IF I wanted to show birds in the UK, I would not tell this young person to buy from a USA ORP breeder. But, she is in the USA. I can tell by reading her previous posts. While, as you say UK Orps are MUCH more popular, even here on BYC, in the USA JUDGES eye's, it is not a popularity contest. And IF she likes to compete, go and look at the birds that are WINNING the BIG SHOWS here in the states.
And again, I am sorry for standing up for us USA ORP breeders, but I am into ORPS more then ALL my other variety's of birds combined. And I have some nice birds from breeders who are here on BYC. Like Jean RIbbeck's Ameraucana's, which are some of the very best Ameraucanas I have seen. I have 5 different lines of French standard Marans and one line of English NON feathered leggers. I am so into Orps, I have 30 pics of my Orps and NONE of my Marans or Jean's Ameraucanas on my BYC PAGE, and I think I have some nice Marans & Ameraucanas. So I will try and stay off my soap box. And let the other breeders of other variiety's show off their stuff. And keep my mouth shut.

Hello,

First I would like to say I personally know Doug Akers and his Buff Orps are AMAZING!!

Here's a few examples of bantam white and black cochins. These birds have all competed in classes of 100+ featherlegs and were either Champion Featherleg, BB or RB in their class.

This bird was Champion Featherleg in May 09

I am sorry for standing up for us USA ORP breeders,

Nothing to apologise for; you stated your point. Fair comment.

But I think, more & more, there are going to be the two separate types, as with the Marans.

iluvmychicks ~~~ WoWoW!! GORGEOUS!!! Makes me want o go out and get some Cochins.
Krys, you know me. You know anything Orp I can't keep my nose out of and my mouth shut. Sometimes it is really hard. I can't resist. I feel like I have to stick up for our guys here in the states. I love my birds, and are proud of the Doug Akers and the Clarence Cannons of the Orp world. And will ALWAYS bow and praise them for, in my opinion, creating great American Orps. And would at a drop of a dime get in line for a UK Orp, just cause it is an Orp.

Thanks lildinkem:) I feel the same way about Buff Orps! Oh....if I could have more room!!

Doug Akers is a super nice guy and very involved with the juniors, he runs the poultry program for the kids and is the extention educator the county over from me, he's always promoting the fancy and helping the kids! I swear he's in the Poultry Press every month with his beautiful birds!! He also has gorgeous Black Sumatras....oooh la la!! I think he won Sumatra Nationals last year.

Shari,
Your right, Doug does seem to get in Poultry Press quite often. I went out to his place this spring and seen, not only his Buffs, but his White Rocks too are incredible.
We need more people like Doug, who try to get great birds in our 4-Hers hands. I have a very short list of BYCers who are gettin free birds from me this winter for their kids to learn with in 4-H next year. That to me, is like winnin a show. I feel more a thrill knowing one of this kids does well with my birds then if it was me. Seeing how I do not show, have no websites, and am a word of mouth type of chicken guy. To let the kids play with my babies is so rewarding.
And your birds are the best I've seen in these parts. Keep up the fantastic work. Hope someday to cross your path and say howdy.
Have fun
Bill

Thank you for all of the friendly replies

I will do some research and go on the breeds website and learn/memorize the standard of perfection. I am just now starting to want to breed and show poultry (before, I just had them for pets and eggs). So I want to get a good picture in my mind for breeding and exhibition birds. I also loved the pictures, UK and USA birds

Thank you again!

OK, just in case the replies were pointed in my direction. Please know that I am not trouncing on the US breeders that are breeding towards the US standards. I just have my own preferences.
