show quality speckled sussex ??

Don,

Can you explain WHY the BACK is judged so heavily in the SS? What are they looking for that would justify the heafty 12 pt value of the back?

Total pts. Pts from Shape Pts from Color

Back 12 (WOW) 6 6

Tail 8 4 4

Wings 8 3 5
Lisa, I am sure you already know why the 6 points for shape, because without the good breed type and shape all we have is a narrow back cull, with no benefit to using for anything. The 6 points for color is because the color on the back is very hard to keep the way it should be.I think it is actually good that they give a nice range of points, this way if you get deducted a couple of points you still have a shot. If anyone wants we could go over the points for Tail and wing

DQs- Solid white feathers showing in any section of the plumage.

Defects+
Large white spangling giving bird an overall too white appearance-
Lack of spangling in Back, Breast, and Lower Body-
Uneven shades of Mahogany Bay in Plumage of female-
White tips that run into the Dark sections of feathers giving a gray and smudgy appearance-
White tips that are Marred with tiny ticks of black, giving a Gray and Smudgy appearance. This is related to improper ground color and improper marking.

Don,

So all the points for the back are based on IMPORTANCE not on specific details. In other words, The WIDER the back the more points you earn in the shape category. Color... What is hard to do? Is there no relationship between the chest and back? If you get the chest right, is the coloring on the back going to follow suit or stand alone?

This is actually for ANY bird. The back is important in that it holds the bird up. The longer it is, the longer the entirety of the bird. If the back is supposed to angle, if the back should be flat, if there are bumps in the back (roach back) or if the back is too short it can cause issues in the breeding department. A nice, long and BROAD back is a sight to behold. You do not want a back that is nice and wide and then all of a sudden becomes narrow and pinches at the tail. You want a bird that has a back that maintains an even width throughout the back. This will cause the hip bones of the hen to be wider and allow for a larger egg as well.

Lisa, just a little comment for thought. What would our SS be like if we had them with backs like the unthrifty birds we see all the time here on BYC. Without the wide long backs they are supposed to have we would not have the fowl with good egg laying ability. Without the good back we can not have the breast width we are looking for in SS. Tying this all in we can not have the width of leg spacing we are looking for without Width of Back. Just like the nice open Tail is determined by the width of back.

More on the points tomorrow.

Very nice and informative post. How are the SS Bantams doing. Best female I have seen in a long time.

Thank you snowbird! I liked your post as well! They are doing well. I keep trying to hatch these eggs off this pullet. They get close to hatch and then die off. I may just have to wait until spring when her eggs are larger.

And thank you for the compliment on her! She is a spitfire, just like I remember the Speckled Sussex being when I had them as a kid.
