show quality speckled sussex ??

The Exhibition and Breeding to the Standard of Perfection forum has been created for those with breeder quality stock to have more serious poultry discussions. This includes discussions on breeding to the standard, genetics, exhibition, breeding strategies, breeding for specific traits, etc.
It’s Staff’s desire to moderate this forum with an eye toward consideration that many of the folks participating here are longtime breeders who may write in a down-to-earth and non-sugar-coated way; this certainly doesn’t mean that, when posting here, the Rules do not apply. This is simply meant to advise folks new to this forum that, for example, if they ask a question about a picture they just posted of a bird from their flock, they should expect a straightforward answer, taken from the viewpoint of someone who is breeding exhibition fowl.
We do not want this section to be a competition among breeders but, rather, a collaborative effort to further the breed they are working with. BYC is a very diverse community, and this section will be no different. Poultry judges, experienced breeders, and those new to breeding are all welcome, and all have something to contribute to this forum.
Participants are encouraged to understand and use the terminology found in the APA Standard of Perfection and avoid usage of terminology that might be considered "slang" in the poultry world.
This section is not intended for discussion of pet birds or birds bred/sold by hatcheries; conversations in regard to these birds and flocks should take place in the General Breed Discussions and FAQ section.

Thank you for the heads-up.

In the mean time, this thread will remain as it was intended... a casual place where folks can learn about the SOP without having to worry about being judged if they use slang terminology.

I guess this thread is an intermediate breeding thread. We are a place where folks can learn what the SOP means for the breed.

It's been a LONG TIME folks.

In the last 6 months, where has your SS flock gone.
I am still working with mine. Last year, I hatched a truck load of males.
This year, I haven't even begun hatching. Instead I am taking the time to build breed pens so that I can get more selective with my breeding.

Last year, we had someone post some pics of their SS in Europe.
The SS hen was one big girl. Has anyone had success with raising some SS hens that meet the SOP for weights?

Math Ace,
When opened the other Sussex list, I wasn't trying to hijack this one. At that time,
I didn't know if this one was being moved ( or wanted to be moved) to the new venue.
So I opened up the other one so the breed would have a presence in the new Forum.
Best Regards,
Karen

Well, my flock is going from zero to 12 by the weekend! Chicks are due to hatch on Friday, so I will pick up on Saturday or Sunday! Looking forward to meeting and chatting with a long-time breeder of SS and picking his brain!

Math Ace, I'd love to see pics of your progress...even progress pics of your pens!

So glad this thread exists...I am a newbie and green, but very keen to learn. I feel comfortable asking "silly" questions here!

Math Ace--- glad to see you are back!!

I have watched my chicks grow up and over wintered the lot of them. OVerall I am at an impass. As they are now, they are great layers, one a day , medium at best, very light tan, and the girls want to be out foraging for the entire day. YOu would think I would be happy with that. I struggle with how I feel about hte lack of meaty ness for a dual purpose bird. . . . .

I look at the width, and the coloring and

hatchery birds are very good layers . . . .

Lisa How are your birds, the breeder line that you are most recently working with?? HOw are they as meat birds? As Layers? as foragers? Still the best line you have had do far??

I wil be working on a project this fall and I'll be looking for some speckled Sussex. Anyone here plan on selling eggs around that time? I don't really want to use the hatchery speckled

I got my babies yesterday! They are so sweet! I wanted more, but had to share. The breeder I went to had a bad hatch for some reason so I only ended up with eight. I also got so e welsummer sand a hamburg just for fun. The breeding stock was impressive, so I am very excited to see how they grow.

Anyone else get babies???
