Keep following, and please participate! The more the merrier.

I'm sort of in the same boat. I had very poor hatch rates. Ended up with one chick out of my first hatch, and three from the second. Then one of those died in a dust bathing accident.

So I don't have much to work with. At all. But the idea is that we can learn what is desired in the breed, and choose the best source possible for our next eggs, or stock in general.

OWNERSHIP of SS is not a prerequisite to participating.
There is lots to learn about the breed BEFORE purchasing stock.

If yall wanna use anymore of the pics of my birds, lemme know. Theres the ones posted here previously, and I think I've got some more here on my computer. I've only got 2 left, and they're not a good combo, so I'm out of the SS "game" Someone stole 4 a few weeks ago, including my best hen.

Just a side note for lack of activity. IT takes people asking questions and people answering the questions. Now you have Walt and myself trying to help with the answers for you but will not ask the question and answer it also.

I would breed to the largest Male also but if the largest one is the male with all the white in tail and wing I would not breed unless I just wanted some egg layers. Breeding the over white males is the fastest way to get young males with too much white overall. We have to start culling somewhere. We still need weights and we will need a good sharp axe. I f you are trying to breed to the SOP using hatchery SS it will be a many year breeding and good paperwork.

Don,

My oldest girls are 4 months old..... Do you want me to wait a month before posting pics or do you think current pics would be ok?

Wide breast and backs..... anything else about breast and backs that we should watch for ? ?

If you have a young bird that is a bit knock kneed, will they grow out of it? What about the width between the legs are the ones that are wider when young, stay the widest? I'm looking for things that I can cull for early, because I can't hold on to 100 birds until they are five months. What things about body type, can you select for by say 14 weeks.

Michele
