Michele, The cow hock birds will not grow out of it normally. If they are narrow will usually stay that way, the narrow back and head birds should be culled, Look for crooked toes, faulty combs, real high tail set, short back. These can be done at a young age.

These two boys are the SAME age?

Yes, they were hatched March 7th, so 4 months old. The bigger one is already bigger than all my full grown standard hens and is mating some of them. He still has to fill out. But since I am thinking utility before show I'll find a home for the other one since I have another two males growing up (from my replacement shipment to give me the total # of pullets I ordered. I just remember size being something that was needed in this variety. Maybe once I get a flock of big ones I can work on how pretty they look. I had originally picked Jersey Giants as a dual purpose breed, but it takes so long for them to mature and fill out, so I heard that sussex also have a good personality. I think it would be neat once I've got a good utility flock for meat and eggs to be able to focus on some aesthetics down the road. This thread is great for me to help me narrow down on desireable vs less desireable. I've only owned chickens for about 4 years, so I'll need to check and see if there's a generic 'breeding for utility' thread.

Thanks!

Look at a Modern Game head ...a close up and it will help you understand. Think long and narrow=crow head.

Lisa, post away when you get some pictures. Try for more than one picture. If these have the welsummer marks try and get a closeup if possible.
