I am looking for if a color is specified for the ear tufts for the Speckled sussex . . . . .

Is it like the black copper marans and white ear tufts are bad or is any color that would normally appear on the bird
- Mahogany bay, black, or white acceptable ? ?

I see nothing in SOP about the ear-tuft, and most we see have the white Tuft, but I doubt if white is correct. White could be correct because of the Spangles, maybe Walt will drop by.

Here is another cockerel for us to look at.... He is slighty older than the previous one. The cockerel # 22 is 17 weeks old. THIS cockerel is 20 weeks old.
They are very much the same size.

OPEN for criteques - - -Cockerel # 21

Well, I'll take a stab at Rooster 20.

Back is long which is good.

Breast shape doesn't look bad. Color: Speckles are in the right places, not sure if it would be considered too white or not.

Wing tips should be up a little higher perhaps? I'm wondering about the long white feathers; is that good or bad?

Tail sickle feathers don't have any white in them which is good. Over all tail looks decent in coloring, and the shape isn't bad to me.

BTW, I just got an order of Speckled Sussex in the mail this morning. I have not been able to get any good stock yet, so I went ahead and got ten from Ideal Poultry. Friendly little boogers right from the start. Not afraid when I put my hand in the box, as a matter of fact they come running and pile in under my hand. I'm sure I will enjoy them. I will still be looking for some SQ birds though. Seems most of the SS are in the South and out West. I've only run across 2 people in Virginia that has them, and they only have 1 or just a few. They seem to be rare in the North East.

Not knowing anything about the standard but coming from a show dog background - this rooster strikes me right off the bat as having good balance if that makes sense. Balance in the body and / or body type is key in dogs - and he really has it - very nice - not taht my opinion means anythign! LOL

This male has the white cottontail at base of tail.

Main Tail feathers no spangle

Breast too much white.

Needs more width on Back and chest.

Wings appear to have White feathers.

Comb is Twisted in front.

Sickles have nice white spangle tips.

Triangular Wing Bay should I think be Darker.

Will answer the other Question a little later.

There is nothing in the SOP and I agree Don. White is probably not the color you want there, but as far as the outcome of the judging, I doubt that it will make any difference. As far as breeding I would say that it should be whatever the ground color is.

One of the interesting things about BYC is that I am asked questions....very good questions....that no one has ever asked before. We are always looking to improve the definitions in the
SOP, so this is a very good thing.

This bird will never amount to anything. Kind of harsh, but he is too narrow, the tail is too high...and badly pinched. He is so white now that it is evident that he will be way too white when he matures. He will probably fill out a bit more, but never to the point where he looks right. In the old days a pinched tail was a first sign of an unthrifty bird...as they called them back in the day. It is a sign of lack of width through the body....a serious fault.
