Don,

I spent the first 6 months of this year calling and writing and emailing EVERYONE..... Judges, breeders, people breeders recommended, etc....

OVER and OVER and OVER I heard basically the same thing ----

" I haven't seen good speckled sussex in years"

OR I heard the same three breeders names repeated. . . . and those breeders are having issues with their flocks this year.

I already subscribed to poultry press and have been keeping an eye out for what you are suggesting.

If you do hear of some good SS, I hope I am one of the first people you email

I will try to get a weight on them tomorrow.

I don't think the hen weighs what she us supposed to, because i can feel her breast bone when I pick her up.

None of my boys look like this guy. I LOVE that he is so dark with so little white.
I see nice white tips on his wings and tail feathers....

He does have a 5 point comb, but I think it is suppose to come off the head instead of following the head.
To me his head seems small compared to his neck... His back is short too.

Can you get a picture from the front, back and top ? ?

I am going to sit back and see what snowbird and fowlman01 say about this guy.

I want your roo!!!! he has something odd going on with markings on the lower part of his chest/belly & wings that I can tell- but- love the body & neck on that boy!!!

Where did you get him?

I'm still looking for an organic SS roo and possibly for an organic chicken currently laying eggs...maybe an Easter Egger or Australorpe, Delaware, Buff Orpington, Light Sussex, Plymouth Rock...or another chicken that is good natured, friendly and a good layer. I'm not looking for show quality but don't want major defects either.

I'm in the Albany, NY area.

Lets start with positives, since he has a lot of them. Nice deep body and he appears to be wide all the way to the back. The tail will probably end up too high, but I am not sure of that.
I would use him to breed from...even with the short back. Very good color. Negatives are: short back and probably the tail angle.

Roger that. I have spent the last 3 months trying to find SOP SS to no avail. I've googled for days on end, sent emails to various people, made some calls, nothing. My daughter went to one county fair and I went to another, and neither one had any chickens at all, just a few cows and sheep. Guess I'll try that Poultry Press too. I just figured that by the time I find any I might be an old man, so went ahead and purchased Ideal SS just to have some.

I tell you what, and maybe it's just me, but it seems that if you aren't a "somebody" in the chicken world some people don't want to fool with you. Many talk about saving the breed, but won't give you the time of day when you talk to them. Reminds me of some gunsmiths I know. Talking to you is not worth their time except to tell you how great they are. I've found people claiming to have SOP SS for sale and when I talk to them they suddenly just had their birds wiped out by predators or something. Or else they won't even answer me back. I think they want to be able to brag about who they sell them to just as much as people want to brag on who they got theirs from. I know that wouldn't be everyone who raises SS, but it has happened to me several times. And of course, another problem is most breeders cannot ship birds to Virginia because of our poultry laws. And as for Virginia, I've found TWO people who have some. One has one rooster, and the other has a few hatchery birds. Good birds must be awfully hard for lots of people to come by though, because out of all the pictures posted on this site of SS, I haven't seen anyone call any of them a show quality bird yet. Might have missed one though.

But I'll keep looking. My best bet might be to find some eggs, but danged if I really want to pay a bunch of money for some shook up embryos that may not even hatch, especially when they have traveled half way across the country to get here. Until then, I'll raise up my hatchery birds, enjoy them and maybe sell some eating eggs once in a while.

this statement is true.... i found it to be very true when i was raising show quality rabbits... until you start beating them and winning BOB or BIS over them they dont want to know you. then when you do there is no way they want you to have any of there stock cause you might beat them with there own stock that they sold you. I knew on rabbit breeder in the breed that I was showing would "cull" her rabbits rather than any one else get them....

Trying to get jap bantam SQ is the same way... the old time breeders/judges talk about helping others and expanding the breed. but ask anyone for hatching eggs or chicks or a pair or something and oh no we don't sell any of our stock or eggs. I dont know if rings true with this breed... but if you have to start with hatchery stock and try to move forward with it then thats what you have to try.

i may get some hatchery chicks at some point if these eggs don't turn out. I think the breed and this variety is very nice. I love the reddish feathers - reminds me of my rhode island red then add spangles like my hamburg to it... LOL... not the same I know but the concept.

Back to learning.... and waiting for my eggies to hatch.
