Now that is a very pretty pullet. I'd love to have a few like that. gloria Jean

I think I finally got some good pictures!

The pullet. She refused to fan her tail.
I believe the male still has a small rise in the middle of the back. The pullet might just be the best one I have ever seen anywhere. Soon as her tail finishes out will be something to look at. Congrats on being able to find these, good luck with them.

Have to ad she has great depth to go along with everything else.

Thank you very much! She was a hands down bird that I had to have. The male was very nice as well and I can see what you mean about that small rise on his back. I wonder what it is? His back is flat when feeling it down.

Do you think this will breed into his offspring? I will be culling against it but do you think it will breed into the lines? I'm in love with these birds. Very friendly so far, even the male! The last male I had (largefowl) was an evil cuss.

I can't wait to see how they finish out. I am so glad I got them! I think they will produce some good offspring.

Have you found the best times to hatch? Do you do it during the winter or during the spring/summer?

OM. what a beautiful pullet........... just love her type and speckles........ she is gonna go places I will bet on it....... The roo is nice as well, and so glad to that he is nice, I also had an evil male, called him devil chicken, he was culled after going after my grandson and me after I whacked him with the broom.....he was a good sized boy but nasty, and don't want that in my birds.
I lost my best hen last Thursday, don't know what happened she was there at 4pm and missing at lock up, no sign of a struggle, didn't hear anything even the boys didn't bark, but she's gone. Thinking a hawk or eagle took her and she didn't even have time to squawk.... poor girl and such a sweet little thing she was. here she is as a hen last year. Mine are Standards.
700

Her name was Peepers and she is the 1 on the left........ Jasmine is also gone she turned into an egg eater, and was given away to as guy who said he could break her of it or would butcher her..... so not sure if she is alive either........... Congrats on your birds tho, I love them..... Kim

Aw darn about your bird! Maybe she went off to be a mother? I wouldn't give up hope just yet!

Thank you for the compliments about my pullet! I can't wait until she starts laying!

THe only thing I have read fromt he sussex Fowl book is that the lt sussex are excellent winter layers; don't really know if this applies to all sussex. Perhaps some inveatigation as to the weather in the original area will reveal laying habits.

Hope that girl just went off to be a mother--I've had two losses that resulted in unauthorized chicks.

The best winter layers are hatched in Feb and March. The breed, as a whole , was bred to be winter layers so the chicks could be hatched earler , raised up and sent via the higgler to the fattener to be ready for market by Derby Day (a big Holiday in England). The circle is complete as the early hatched females which didn't go to market become excellent winter layers for the next year.
Best,
Karen
