then why are they shown as aov naked neck silkies? even at absc nationals

I don't show and care very little about labels. Calling showgirls NN/Silkies sounds good to me. The project that I am thinking of working on is crested (I'll use polish first) NN blue egg layers. I know of several folks who have NN that lay blue eggs but I want mine to look more fancy, just for fun. Some folks have crossed NN with many different breeds and have crested NN, feather footed NN and bearded NN. NN are good breed by themselves and since the naked neck gene is dominate they are fun to make mixed breeds. Amen

I like my little showgirl hen because she is such a character and doing a serious job as a foster parent. But she is really high maintenance.

I don't understand the logic here. many varieties of chicken are made from out crossing. I just read about a Buff Laced Ameraucana project. They are going to use Ameraucanas and Polish. Is the ABC going to say that they are related to Polish so they can't be an Ameraucana? Showgirls are outcrossed. They can be crossed with Silkies and make both. They just have a naked neck. I just don't understand what the deal with putting "labels" on things is either. I have found with chickens its all about the label put on your bird.

Yes the showgirl term is for a silkie that has a naked neck...They have black skin 5 toes crest and the silkie ear color. Most Showgirls unless it is a new project and F5 or more showgirl breedings. After so many breedings to just silkies They are not just a project anymore they are silkies with naked necks.

Showgirls are not that new.

The problem with getting them recognized is a) numbers b) choosing a color (probably white),... but the big obstacle is setting a standard. You can't write a standard and say "some can have bowties and some don't and either is ok". You also have to decide if they will have the feathers under the chin (some refer to as bearded, I believe it is more a reflection of the extension of the nakedness, and many don't have the wattles present in non-bearded birds), should they be hetero or homozygous, should they have wattles or not, etc etc etc. Getting everyone to settle on the same thing then have enough high quality SGs meeting those expectations show up is the problem, in part.

Some people, like Sheryl Butler a long time showgirl enthusiast/breeder, prefer the homozygous appearance (the nakedness is extended, no bowtie), others prefer the heterozygous birds.

I show mine as Silkies AOV- white showgirl (change color for variety being shown)

I haven't asked anyone on the APA or ABA committee if trying to get these birds approved would be easier as a new breed or as a variety of silkie. I have discussed it with a couple judges, and it's always a lively debate. If you want fun times at a show, wait until the banquet and get a few opinionated fanciers and judges together and ask them about showgirls, and then ask them about lavenders and why they have to be called self blue, then ask them about seramas. You'll learn a lot, laugh a lot, and probably want to plug your ears and say "la la la" more than once. That said, they are all out to protect, advance, and preserve the hobby.

i have a writen standard on my web site it is the silkies standard with the neck standard of the neked neck the breed
§ Neck: Short, gracefully arched, devoid of feathers, except for a permissible small tuft at front of neck nearly halfway down; skin, very smooth

i think the showgirls need veriety club with writen standard
there are lot breeder that have showgirls that are top named silkie breeders
that way we would know how many people are one board with this
