Showgirl thread- for posting pictures and discussing breed!

I finally got a tiny pullet egg from my blue bowtie frizzle show girl!!!

I'm going to give her a couple of months and then maybe try a hatch and see how it goes. I still only have a white silkie roo for her, but I am hatching some showgirl/silkie mix eggs I just put under a broody together. So maybe I will get a good roo or another color pullet to test on. I'm really trying to get the frizzle gene out and into my sg flock I'm planning.

Chickendales I am by no means being rude but I personally know Ultrasol and she is very knowledgeable and also very sweet so lets please keep this on topic and stop throwing stones. This thread is for discussing showgirls and I for one enjoy it very much and don't want it closed.

Warm Regards,
Tisha

So can I change the subject and ask if anyone else has any opinion of my baldies? I am seriously considering spending a huge wad on the one but it will be really crummy if it turns out tO be a boy and I can't keep it after all of this

Sure! I'll do that when I get home

I seriously think they are way too young to tell, but people said they look rooish and I hope that's just because they are so extra bald...

I am decent on sexing my silkies sometimes they fool me. I have never been able to sex a showgirl very well..LOL I can tell the roos pretty young but I have been iffy on ALOT of them.

okay be prepared, this thread is about to get TOTALLY pic heavy.

These chicks are all different ages. 3 to 6 weeks old. all equally taken a chunk of my heart (except showgirl number six, he bites me ALOT.)

showgirl # 3
*note, this is the largest of the seven which leads me to believe it may be the oldest. its also the fluffyest which makes me wish i was more interested in keeping white!

showgirl # 6

*note: this one was a total pain in the butt to photograph. It wouldnt stop moving and peeping and biting.

Peggy
*note: this is the most important one. Since i am trying to find a vet that will help me either fix the leg or amputate it, i really need for Peggy to be a girl so i can keep her after all of it. Peggy has stolen my heart (and my bank account) and hopefully isnt going anywhere.

OKAY, so there they are, the new crew!
i am only allowed to keep two, and id like to sell off at least three of them right now to make more room in the brooder. I am mostly interested in keeping a buff and keeping Peggy. Ifeel like its way to soon to tell gender in these guys, but people were already throwing out the roo card to all of them. I htink its because of the weird spike of feathers on all of their heads and the HUGE bald spots they have around their combs. But you guys are the experts. I know you are all mostly interested in the fluffy headed ones (i was too! but now i guess i like the extra bald ones.) but do any of you have experience with the super bald ones? Are these kind of showgirl even desirable? I really thought the lady was gonna send me bearded bowtied birds, but i guess not. sheesh. anywhoo... yeah, opinions?

Dales- sorry you feel that way. I'm basing what I said on your opinions and questions on this thread and others. I don't think I need to say any more on that topic. You are welcome to your opinion- I already stated mine.

Aubrey- Too young to sex in my opinion. I would not spend more than you can reasonably afford on any one bird. If it is a roo, which it may well be, do you have a home for it where it wouldn't end up culled anyway? What is the quality of life of the bird if it is not fixed? Even if it is fixed, such issues can translate into arthritis later on. If it were my bird, I would try to fix it on my own. At this age, if it is a congenital problem, it's likely too late to fix. If it is a slipped tendon, what are the chances of it slipping back out? Can the bird withstand the rigors of breeding, or should it even be used for breeding?

not trying to put a damper on your hopes...

all reasonable questions...

i dont plan on breeding birds ever. I have a small property and the birds are for my enjoyment only. Im not trying to better a breed or anything. If it is a roo, my boyfriend would like for us to keep it. He has been wanting a roo for a while. We talked to our neighbors about it and they were perfectly fine with it. We fostered a roo for about a month because a friend could not keep him any longer, so he stayed with us until that friend found him a good home. The neighbors loved him and could really not hear his crowing (i kept him in until 8:00 am everyday). I just dont really want a roo personally. If Peggy turned out to be a roo, of course i would keep it, i just think it would be nice to know before i spend the money to fix the leg.
The reason i am going to have the leg fixed is because i am not nearly experienced enough to do it myself. I tried slipping the tendon back myself but it would not budge. Basically i want to fix the chick because i have the money, and frankly it will help me sleep better at night to know that i did not put any kind of value on an animals life. Id do it for my dog or cats in a heartbeat. I know it sounds absolutely nuts...but i think its the only thing thats going to make me feel better. If the vet says this chicks quality of life will be affected, i will have the vet euthanize the chick. I am exploring amputation as an option, though. I hear lots of success stories about one legged chickens. I even went to monterey this weekend and they had some one legged rescue birds at their aquarium that seemed to be doing just fine
smile.png

so i guess I really just want to fix it for me. I probobly wont get it an orthopedic surgery, i think im just going to have the leg amputated. Peggy just hops around on one leg right now anyhow. The other chicks dont seem to care one bit.

IDK, is this absolutely crazy? i mean, i know it is...but is it, like REALLY REALLY super nuts?
