Showgirl thread- for posting pictures and discussing breed!

It is my understanding the skin color should be gypsy or very dark, ie. Silkie shade. How is this achieved when redness keeps cropping up as the bird matures? Are most breeders just breeding back to Silkies to attempt to darken the skin? Is the breed not far enough along to eliminate the gene responsible? I've noticed the problem is more prevailent with buffs and reds than whites, blks, blues.

Well,.. I think you might be able to get away with a dark mulberry on buff. You can cross back to silkies or darker skinned showgirls to darken skin color. This lighter skin color pops up in silkies of those same colors.

Naked Necks have a gene that makes their skin red. I'm assuming part of the problem is this gene being passed to the Showgirls, as I've seen some good breeders have black Showgirls with a reddish tint to their skin, especially mature roos. It must be difficult to irradicate.

I have a showgirl roo with a bowtie on his neck and also a gray showgirl hen with a bowtie would it be ok for them to be in a breeding pen together? Will I get all showgirls with bowties or the chance of some regular silkie chicks also?

I wouldn't breed showgirl to showgirl my understanding is your gunna get more then a naked neck . They tend to get naked in other places too

. I take my one showgirl roo and let him visit different breeding pens . I have white - buff- partridge - showgirls growing out . I'm stiil in the early stages of breeding them . I'll keep my best of each color and add them to that particular color then breed back again - i could be wrong but figure it will take me a good couple of years to have correctness in each color ( Type - toes - skin ...) Hopefully someone with more experince will chime in and give you a bit of advice . I'd personally be very interested to hear myself ~~Tammy

Depends on the quality of the birds. Sheryl Butler got BV at the Western Silkie National with a homozygous showgirl (no bowtie) that was just stunning. I wish I had a picture, as it would help allay some misconceptions about breeding showgirl to showgirl if the birds are of good quality... just like the often mentioned 'generation' thing.
It doesn't matter how many generations of crossing back to silkies has occurred if the quality is not there in the birds. I don't know how many generations out my birds are, but they, in all ways, resemble silkies except for the naked necks.... black skin, correct comb, five toes, good foot feathering, tons of fluff.

i have heard you can make sex links in f1 if you use black silkie roo over buff or red turkens hens. the pullets will have dark skins roos wont.

Thanks! Do you know if this is only for the first generation? I have a while to wait for the F2 generation to see what else I can learn on this! That is exactly the colors I had used to get my F1's.
