Showgirl thread- for posting pictures and discussing breed!

This is the first time in many years that i have added full silkies to my flock.
I have seen light skinned SG chicks and have a friend that even bought some at a show this spring and now that they are starting to maturer their skin has turned a bright red on the neck and face. I sure hope that this will not be my experience, But if it is it will explain all the pale skin out their, and show that we as breeders need to spend more time improving our SG's than adding Silkie blood to them....breed a few generations out to get rid of the slat color in newly hatched chicks.

The clean necked cockerel I got (I believe he came from you) at the spring show has a lot of red showing through on his neck since hitting maturity. He's also a jerk...not planning on keeping him much longer. My SG's have dark black/blue skin but it does make sense that a rooster would end up with a little red tinge on the comb/waddles. I know preferably not but I can see how that would have popped through on some.

I do agree that the rooster has a dark reddish mulberry color that is well hidden in the dark skin. What I am talking about is bright red with dominant red combs and faces. Here is a picture of a young cockerel, that as a chick looked perfectly normal but a little light.

As you can see he is showing alot of red..

My intention here is not to point fingers, but to be aware and learn from my experiences. so as I and others continue breeding SG's, we can correct or improve quality of the breed. I would hope, that is what we all want..

Here is my latest hatch from a very nice silkie Hen and a clean necked roo. All bearded/bow-tied. can't wait to see them in a few months.

if your breeding to show quailty silkies the next generation should be better then then there showgirl parents and i wouldnt breed to that silkie male

Silkie Hen too SG Roo. If your talking about the red one, their is no way I would use him for breeding. He isn't mine.

Again this is not one of my chicks, the picture was provided by a friend. she bought chicks at a show.

What I'm saying is that i would hope that this is not the case with my recent hatch, but their is no way to now until they are older. I now what my birds turn out like, but when you add new blood from another bloodline, their is no way to now what they will look like unless we raise them up to adults. If we are always selling chicks from un-none hens or roos. we my be spreading something like this around.

I plan to keep the chicks from my recent hatch so i will now what my buyers are getting, as i continue to raise chicks in the future.

I have other chicks that hatched this year by my flock that I have had for many years and have proved to produce nice color.
