Here is the mother hen silkie, still pink from the spring show raffle.

she is know setting (no eggs) but has no idea how to take care of eggs. she is always leaving them behind. I had to collected them and let four of my SG's hatched them. Sad

when a hen doesn't know how to care for her eggs. *The good news is every egg hatched**

Again this is not one of my chicks, the picture was provided by a friend. she bought chicks at a show.

What I'm saying is that i would hope that this is not the case with my recent hatch, but their is no way to now until they are older. I now what my birds turn out like, but when you add new blood from another bloodline, their is no way to now what they will look like unless we raise them up to adults. If we are always selling chicks from un-none hens or roos. we my be spreading something like this around.

I plan to keep the chicks from my recent hatch so i will now what my buyers are getting, as i continue to raise chicks in the future.

I have other chicks that hatched this year by my flock that I have had for many years and have proved to produce nice color.
i think she just bought bad batch i dont get birds like this

i think you should get some realy nice babies from her

My intention here is not to point fingers, but to be aware and learn from my experiences. so as I and others continue breeding SG's, we can correct or improve quality of the breed. I would hope, that is what we all want..

Would this rooster be the sire of the one I got from you at the spring show? It seems like maybe with the roos that the older they get the more red that bleeds through? With my own flock my roosters have dark marroon-ish red on thier waddles and comb, but not thier necks and I'm just wondering if I should be culling out anything that has the red going down the neck.

Here is my latest hatch from a very nice silkie Hen and a clean necked roo. All bearded/bow-tied. can't wait to see them in a few months.
AAAARRRGGGHH!!! Why are SG chicks so stinking cute!! These are darling...wish my hen would get over her broodiness and start laying again...

I'm glad that you posted pix of an appropriate roo - my white bow tied roo has a very slight red tinge to his skin now that he is of breeding age. It actually isn't quite as dark as the one pictured, but (as was mentioned by RIRJen) maybe that comes with age? Hormone related?

I also have a black bow tied roo that blushes bright red when he's after his "ladies", or defending his turf from one of the Silkie roos. Otherwise his skin is very black. It seems to be alot like blushing or brought about when you would expect him to be experiencing some type of hormonal surge. Kinda interesting...and his babies have all had black, black skin when he is bred to his dark blue, bow tied hen. All so interesting!
