A bit of both. If the poop is visible, I/ll either use the cat litter scooper to get it out, or simply throw more paper ontop it. Depends on how much time I have at the moment. It will pack down, and when I clean the cages, I roll up the newspaper that is layered thick, and throw it all on the compost. Very easy clean up. Make sure they cant kick it out of their cage though, They can quickly make a mess that way
