Could any of you experienced egg masters out there give me some answers as to why our eggs are shrinking? We have Buff Orps, RIR, EE, Brown Leghorns, Black Australorps. We were getting mostly Large and Extra Large eggs. Now we are getting mostly Medium to Large. Any ideas why this could happen? Thanks for any advice.

I'm not sure, but one of my Marans came back from her molt laying pullet sized eggs. They got bigger, but still not full size. I haven't had it happen before.

Well, I just read that the shade/darkness of the egg color lightens as time goes by until the next molt, and when they start laying again, the colors will be darker. Maybe this happens to the size also?

Except it didn't happen with my other Marans. This marans that is laying smaller eggs also laid her first 3 after molting without any paint on them. They were a light beige, so I think there is just something wrong with her "inner parts".

It is true that their egg color lightens as get later in the lay cycle.

Weather permitting, I'm going to treat for mites this weekend when I clean the coop. I'm going to spray the coop. What would be a good dust to get for the chickens? I have sevin dust but not sure about using it on the chickens.

I use DE, but I'm not sure that it's only good as a preventative or not. If you do use sevin or something else that is strong, do you have to worry about not eating the eggs for a while?
