One of my chickens has a problem. The toes are receding, that is, they are getting shorter. One of the toenails has fallen off, and I fear that soon she will be walking around only pegs.

Another person I know has two chickens with the same problem. What is going on? Not all the same breed.

O.k.

Here is a pic. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks.

I may be way off here, but I had an EE that broke her leg. Eventually her toenails fell off and her toes took on that stumpy look. They never fell off, but just atrophied a bit. Maybe you chicken had some type of injury and this is just the results.

Injury such as frost bite is most common for toes to "shrink and fall off". But for that to happen in summer unless the OP is in a cold area would point towards some other sort of injury.
