I was worried about one egg so I read the assisted hatching thread and made a little hole then carefully peeled the shell back around the air cell. I could see through candling that the chick hadn't even absorbed the yolk sac.

Once I had the shell open enough I could see the chick wasn't moving at all. It had become shrink wrapped.

It's sibling might be in the same predicament. It is still alive, must be still absorbing the yolk sac as it's making eating movements with its beak, but is the membrane supposed to be so close around them? I can see it's not finished pulling in all the blood either. I don't know what to do. I put some coconut oil on the membrane to keep it moist.

put it back in the incubator do you know approximately when it pipped externally?

what color was the inner membrane when you opened the top?

the membrane is fine right up around their face. there's a hole they're getting air.

do you have more than one egg with the shell opened by you? you shouldn't be able to see the yolk from the hole you've made in the picture you've posted.

Thid one hasn't pipped internally. I was worried so I figured, based on the article on here I could just make the tiny hole and leave it at that. Since I had it out I went ahead and candled it real quick. I could see the yolk.

This was #19. It was already dead. I'm guess it happened on day 18 because I didn't candle that day and saw yesterday that the air sac had pulled down a lot more.

Now, #17, had me a bit worried because it looked almost like 19. So I made candled, didn't see yolk sac but didn't expect to anyway, I was surprised with the other one. I made the hole and slowly broke open that area. As the membran around the chick seemed so tight I got to worrying a bit more.

It's alive, though, still absorbing blood and making eating motions with its beak.

If the membrane is fine up against their face like that then I'll let it alone for now. But, like I said, I did put coconut oil on the membrane to keep it moist and I've made sure the humidity is at a good place. Higher 60s, possibly 70%, filled with warm water. Temp is around 99.5/100.

or... was there no external pip?

if there was no external pip it could be 48 hours before it's ready to come out. assuming it had pipped internally on it's own.

(I'm not trying to sound scary... sorry if i do.)

Nah, not scary. I like to err on the side of caution and as my gut has been right about so many other things this past 3 weeks I was listening to it.

I was a little over-worried about the one in the picture, #17, because of what happened to its sibling, #19, that *was* shrink wrapped.

Ok... what day are you on now? As long as you keep the membrane moist it should be able to pip through it.

Day 20. And I know that it's still early and all, so I tried not to be concerned, but my gut wouldn't quit.

I'll keep an eye on it, for sure and moisten if needed, but the humidity *should* be okay.

I have never tried to assist without an external pip myself. I know your anxious feeling only too well. I have 3 in my incubator that pipped this morning.

With the hole youve made it might not be able to get out on its own but you should give it a chance to try. Wait to the end of day 21. If it hasnt made an internal pip by then you can make a super small cut in the inner membrane right at the end of its beak avoid all blood veins. You could use those super small scissors that come with a nail clipper set. But for now youve gotta wait it could easily be 72 hours before this chick is ready. Possibly more

Thank you so much! I've just never seen how close the membrane sits to their face :/

But, I do have another question: Is the blood supposed to be pooled like this? It was like this when I opened it. I know the7 absorbed it and all but I've also heard of them accidentally breaking open a vein.
