Hi all,

I've just recently purchased my first ever ducks - a trio or gorgeous pekins - which seemed extremely happy running around where we purchased them, but are now extremely shy, running into their house whenever we come near (much to the dismay of my three year old!).

We've only had them for three days, so i assume its normal to be a bit unsettled after moving, but I was hoping that you folks may have some suggestions of good ways to help ease them in and make them feel more comfortable?

It will take some time for them to settle in and feel comfortable/safe around you. Let them do as they want and try not to force them to be around you just yet, give them some space. When near them move slowly and don't make any scary noises or move scary things near them. You want them to associate you with safety and good experiences. Also, try tossing them some treats (corn, peas, mealworms, etc) so they begin to associate you with good things. Start from farther away so they don't run into their house to hide from you, then toss them closer and closer to you so they also have to come closer. This is a long process, it may take weeks or even longer. Depends on the birds. Just take things slowly and don't rush them, they will come around in time. Good luck and keep us posted, ok?

Thanks for the advice, that's reassuring to hear. I figured it'd take some time so glad to know it's all normal :)

I did give them a few treats yesterday which they seemed to enjoy, so I'll keep going with treats and giving them space. Cheers
