sick 2 month old chick - PLEASE HELP!

Hi guys... My poor chick has a prolapse on her bottom. I really am at a loose end! Does this mean the end of the road? Will need to be culled? Can she be fixed. ??

You can bathe her in a betadine or epsom salt solution bath...make sure the vent is clean...then apply some honey or preparation H to her vent..try gently to push the prolapse in (it may take several attempts)...keep her isolated from the main flock for a couple of days...is she yet laying eggs or is she very young?

I have managed to push the prolapse back in, she is washed and clean as can be, had a bit of a chill but I've warnmed her up and she's now in a box with hay a hot water bottle and feed and drink in the my bedroom with me.she is two months old . Should this be ok?

Sounds great treatment...did you put any honey or Preparation H on her vent area ?

Honey has antibacterial properties as well as helping to shrink the tissue back in..

Good luck to you both...sleepless nights eh? It is 12.45 by now in London...I am an hour ahead in France...I should be off to my slumber but I do so love being here on BYC...crazy chicken people....

Prolapse is back ok but she can't poo properly. She looks like she is contracting, her tummy is going up and down and her bottom is trying to push but. I thing is coming out. Every now and then a little dribble of watery poo. It's really really smelly not like a normal smelling chicken poo, I'm concerned really about an infection. She still isn't her usual self... Any ideas? I haven't used honey or anything else on her. Trying to give her some milk and the solution coxoid with water...

Hemorrhoid cream works to get the swelling down and it also numbs the area, as she would be in considerable pain. This link should help. :)

Hi
I had a 5 week old chick that was straining to poop and it was just coming out watery and dribbling out of it's vent and caking it's feathers. I bathed it in warm salt water daily for a week, gently cleaned the vent with a cotton bud and emulsifying ointment and fed it a mixture of probiotic yoghurt, scrambled egg and chick crumb. I really felt the yoghurt in the diet was the key which turned the corner, but keeping the vent clean and lubricated was important.
Hope you see some improvement soon. It sounds like you are doing a great job so far though.

Best wishes

Barbara

Thank you all so much for your help. Nothing I did was working unfortunately and she kept prolapsing. Eventually, as awful as it sounds what was coming out of her was crusting and yellow and I thought possibly infected. The smell was not nice so I took we to the farm where I bought her. They said stheyd never seen anything like it before but would try to nurse her to health for me. Unfortunately she passed away with them at the farm. Totally gutted poor little thing, at least she is out of pain... Thank you all so much again for your help it was and very much is appreciated thank you!

So very sorry to hear that she didn't make it. You did as much as you could but it sounds like she had an internal infection and at that age the odd were stacked against her.
There is so much joy to be had from keeping chickens, but also some heartache too. Sadly you have had the heartache first. Hope your next chicken experience is a joyous one.

Best wishes

Barbara

So very sorry for you...an awful experience...she is at peace now, in time you will remember the good times you shared with her.
