Sick and tired of people not locking they dogs up...

When we moved here and started looking at houses I only wanted one thing, a fenced yard. There were only two properties that had that feature with acreage. We bought the 2nd one. Our 8.5 acres is totally fenced in that field fencing and while deer can jump over it and small animals can get through it, large dogs can not. It keeps my 4 dogs in and all the mutts that everyone drops off or let run out. My dogs and cats and now chickens are very important to me to keep as safe as possible. Even with the fence I still keep the chickens penned up but it does add another layer of protection. I am sure they put in the fence in the 80's when the house was built but it has held up remarkable well-looks like it was pretty simple to install too. The posts are just dug in about 2' with no concrete and they have held up just fine.

The house still sucks but is getting better over time, but I don't regret insisting on the fence. I love the security that my fence gives. It is a big expense that I agree you shouldn't have to do but if you do decide to go that route, you won't regret it.

Sorry about your loss.

Hmmm... do they make shock collars, and where were they when i met my 1st husband?

They've had shock collars for years. The problem is that even the most stupid SOBs figure out how to unbuckle them and get away.

Get some large conibear traps and take them around to your neighbors and tell them your having varmint problems and you are going to be setting the traps all around your property and you would recommend that they keep their dogs tied up.

Something I could never do. If I'm not man enough to take responsibility for what I think is the right thing to do, I shouldn't be shooting someone else's dog.

But that's just me.

I used to agree with you until I read on different threads here about the insane neighbors some people have. You might shoot their dog and let them find out and the next you know your dog is shot while in his yard, your chickens are murdered, your house is set on fire, your kids are bullied at achool.

Call me a coward or call me a realist, but there are a lot of people that shouldn't have too much information about what you do or are planning to do to protect your property.

Well, then, if I didn't want to put up with that or had no way to effectively respond, I reckon I wouldn't kill their dog.

But again, that's just me. I just can't go do something and sneak around about it.

I have to agree that fencing is the only long term solution. We fenced in about 2 acres just around the home place, barns etc. with the field fence mentioned before. End of problem. With no fence the problem of roaming dogs just keeps happening. There will never be an end to people who let their dogs run loose, dump them, or just accidental escapes etc., etc.
