When we moved here and started looking at houses I only wanted one thing, a fenced yard. There were only two properties that had that feature with acreage. We bought the 2nd one. Our 8.5 acres is totally fenced in that field fencing and while deer can jump over it and small animals can get through it, large dogs can not. It keeps my 4 dogs in and all the mutts that everyone drops off or let run out. My dogs and cats and now chickens are very important to me to keep as safe as possible. Even with the fence I still keep the chickens penned up but it does add another layer of protection. I am sure they put in the fence in the 80's when the house was built but it has held up remarkable well-looks like it was pretty simple to install too. The posts are just dug in about 2' with no concrete and they have held up just fine.
The house still sucks but is getting better over time, but I don't regret insisting on the fence. I love the security that my fence gives. It is a big expense that I agree you shouldn't have to do but if you do decide to go that route, you won't regret it.
Sorry about your loss.
