Sick Bantam

thats awesome ! I dont know how much they hold . til the crop started to expand. I have only done it a couple times. I also guess at the length based on the outside. I did about 1/2 -1 in. past the hole .

Yeah, I got 1 foot of the tubing (new, unused and clean) and it went in close to 3 inches.

I want to express how tiny she is- after researching chicken lice, I think she had them the whole time I've had her. She's always been smaller and a bit slower than the rest of the flock, and significantly smaller & with less plumage and more tattered feathers than her sister. Honestly I thought she was going to mature into a rooster by how her tail feathers looked- but now examining her I see she's been chewed to the bone back there.

I'm going to add a picture of her in her current state. I've had sick chickens before, and I work on farms, honestly we must be doing something right because she should have died two nights ago judging by her condition.

I'm new to lice and mite issues, in the 5 years I've worked around chickens we've never had an issue with them. I've owned a small flock for three years or so.

A crop should be able to hold 5% of their weight, but the various websites say to start with 1/3 to 1/2 of that.

5% of 300 grams is 15ml, so best to start with no more than 5ml of just fluids, then repeat in 60-90 minutes, and every few hours until hydration is corrected. I know all too well the feeling of thinking they need food, but believe me, this can kill them if they aren't hydrated.

Correctly placed, the tube will be in their crop. With a 300 gram chick, I'm gonna guess that's about 4" to 6".

Okay, so I just measured the distance I would insert a tube on a newly hatched bantam chick and it's about 1.5", then I checked a 12 day old, 120 gram peachick and it was 4".

If the tube was inserted into your chick's crop, and all it could hold was less that 3ml, then that is is what you should go forward with. Tubing is part science, part art, so only give your chick what you think it can handle. Make sense?

This time around we just gave her warm water with a sprinkle of salt and a dab of honey. We also got the tube in somewhere between 4-6 inches.

Here's her picture from an hour ago after the tubing. The lighter is just for reference.

Is there anything else I should be looking for, or does this sound like a severe case of anemia/anorexia from lice? Corid is treating her potential cocci, she's had yogurt in the past 24 hours, and had a dewormer last week, second round due to begin on Tuesday. I feel like I'm covering all my bases here, but shes just in this stasis.

Repeat the fluids in 60-90 minutes. Is she pooping?

she looks pretty weak for sure. I am wondering if an antibiotic would be in order or if it would make things worse. Maybe someone has a better idea ? If infection is there a small shot would be easy enough but if she has cocci wont that make it worse ?

Most antibiotics can be given with Corid.

I kept asking about the picture for tubing . Very nice . LOL

Austin, any changes ? If she is still with you and its available I think I would try a shot of tylan for her. At this point I dont think it will hurt unless she is better this am.
