Last saturday I lost a chick to what we think was coccidiosis. Treating birds with Sulmet since saturday evening. I sterilized all food items, brooder has been completely cleaned out. Tonight I came home and one of my birds is kind of hanging out with her eyes closed, acting sleepy. She was eating, drinking and pecking around while I was checking them out. Although her one eye was closed a lot of the time. She then just went to sleep slightly puffed. THe other 2 birds that she lives with are both acting completely normal. They are 6 weeks old.

I put paper towels down to see if she had any irregular stool, but she did not poop. Vent is clean. This is not how the other bird who we lost looked at all, but I am really scared that something is wrong with her. I plan on running to feed store first thing to talk to my local chicken expert, but I can't really do anything but ask for help on here right now!

Any advice would be appreciated,
Thanks

Cocci takes a while to recover from especially in the hardest hit birds. Their GI system fills with lesions in response to the cocci overload, and although you have cleared the load the lesions remain until they have enough time to heal. In the meanwhile, she is not able to absorb nutrients through those damaged areas of the intestines. This can prove to be fatal in really ill birds.

Give her a few more days, but don't be surprised if she dies despite treatment. I am sorry.

Good luck.

Thank you for the info.
She actually looks better today. I separated her last night and started her on corid first thing this morning. She is acting like herself this afternoon so I am hoping she continues to do well. I am also wondering if maybe she was just super tired from being chased all day long by two cockerels? Maybe I am just being overly paranoid from the trauma last weekend.
I will do a full corid course and hopefully everything will be ok..
Thanks again.

I have one chick out of my 6 (12 days old) that started acting sleepy, not active all of a sudden. She just sits on the little roost in the brooder. She is drinking but I haven't seen her eat since late yesterday afternoon when this stared. I'm new at this and don't have a clue as to what to do. poop is runny, eyes look bright, she is just sitting. HELP

Hi Scorwin,
I wish that I had some great advise for you. I am very new to the chicken world myself. I just had what appeared to be a coccidiosis outbreak in my one group of babies. I was advised to separate the sick one, and treat all of them with medication (Sulmet). I also cleaned out the brooder and sterilized everything. I lost the original bird who was showing advanced symptoms (bloody poop, breathing heavily, huddled and closed eyes) and then about a week later my other pullet started acting off. I separated her and began treating with a different medication (corid) and all appears to be well right now.
It might be a good idea to separate her for now. That way you can keep tabs on her and maybe avoid spreading whatever she has to the others..

I hope that someone comes through to help you with this. I know how scary it is. It is so hard not to get attached!
Good luck and I hope your bird pulls through.
