I got an order of chicks from ideal last friday and yesturday noticed a chick off by itself in a corner of the brooder gasping for air.
1) What type of bird , age and weight.: It is a BLRW
2) What is the behavior, exactly.: It is acting very sleepy and kind of falls over on its feet when falling asleep standing up, Gasping for air
3) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma.: No bleeding and no wounds
4) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation.: I haven't a clue, it was fine the first day, sleepy and cold from shipping.
5) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all.: It has been eating non medicated chick starter and vitamins and electrolytes in the water, I have seen it drink water on its own several times as well
6) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc.: Poop looks a bit runny and brown
7) What has been the treatment you have administered so far?: Just the V&E in the water and comfort
8 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet?: Vet is not an option, I would like to treat it here.
9) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help. No pic
10) Describe the housing/bedding in use: I keep them on paper towels on top of the pine shavings for the first few days, I had planned on taking them off the paper towels today
Any idea on what i should do med wise? should i seperate the baby from the rest even tho if it has an illness all were exposed to it. I lost 2 already, dead in the box when i brought it home from the PO. None of the others are acting sick at all so far. The brooder is between 90-95 degrees. Im worried about this little one especially after someone else told me their chick from ideal died from the same symptoms. I chose not to have them vaccinated and keep them off medicated feed as a personal choice. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Rachel
