I have a White Leghorn and she is behaving like a person with a terrible cold. First she started sneezing then breathing funny. When i picked her up she discharged some clear slimey goo form her mouth. She's also draining from her nose. I have separated her from all my other birds. Need help! What can i do to help her?

The biggest thing right now is to keep her away from your other birds and monitor the rest of your flock closely. You should also put your hen in a warm, quiet, dk. spot and it wouldn't hurt to add some ACV with the mother (I use Bragg because it is raw and unfiltered) in the water. You will use 1 Tbs per gallon of water. If it looks like the illness is progressing, she might need some antibiotics.

I also would like to welcome you to our wonderful site!

Well you did the right thing seperating her from the others. Sorry I can't help, So far none of my chickens have gotten sick. Did you try to search her symptoms? I believe arlier someone else had a similar post. Sorry I couldn't help much, and sorry your chicken is feeling bad.

I'm fairly new to the chicken thing also but I understand that chickens can get colds just like humans. You did do the right thing by seperating her, keep her warm and in a quiet dark room. Hopefull someone else will be able to give you more info. You might also do a search on BYC about coughing or sneezing chickens.

my chicken started with the same symptoms but more in her airway last night. This morning she is doing better. I did not give her anything. if you go to member pages and lookup rimshoes BYC page he has a lot of easy to understand information on how to identify the problem. Hope things work out.

Ditto. Chickens can get colds, and I think the best thing to do is to isolate her and make sure she's warm.

I am new to chickens, too and I totally feel your pain! Good luck!

Thanks for the info. I appreciate it very much! I will try this and keep you posted.

You are very welcome! Been there done that with my whole flock and it's not fun. The trick is to figure out what it is that she has exactly. It is sounding like CRD (Chronic Respiratory Disease) to me, but I could very well be wrong.

Another thing that would help is to use some VetRx on her if you can get some where you live. I would have to mail order it, but so many here on BYC have used it and it has worked miracles for their flock.

One very important thing that I failed to mention is that you need to be careful and practice good biosecurity with this hen and your flock. You don't want to cross contaminate them if at all possible. You need to tend to the healthy ones first, then to your sick one. Don't wear the same shoes or clothes from one place to the other. Hopefully whatever this is, it won't spread.

Be sure you do check back in. I am very interested to know how she does.
