sick chicken HELP!!

so a few days ago I bought an Orpington chicken, over the days she hasn't been eating much, just a few pecks here and there but wasn't ever interested in the chicken food (she does drink though). I also kept noticing her sneezing once in a while. today she is limping badly yet she had no cuts and her leg looks fine. the most worrisome part is her breathing, its like she has bubbles in her lung ( idk how to explain) like every time she inhales you can hear small bubbly pops. anyone know what it might be and is it contagious?

they never even wanted to tell us about their scaly mites. something that is giving me some hope is that the other chickens I bought her with are really healthy.
It does sound like you are dealing with respiratory disease. I'm very sorry.
You mention that she does drink - is her crop empty in the mornings?
All the chickens you got from this person have SLM too?

You will want to treat the SLM as soon as possible - apply a good coat of vaseline, A+D ointment, Nu-Stock or similar to the legs to help smother them. It would be a good idea to check them all over for body lice and mites too.

For the one with respiratory symptoms also look inside her beak for any lesions, plaques or canker.
The limping is concerning as well. Re-check the feet and the bottom of the feet. Look at the joints for any swelling.

Antibiotics might help with symptoms, but if you are dealing with a respiratory disease, then there is no cure. Most make birds carriers for life and it can spread to your existing flock and any more birds you bring in.

Hi There.
Although i live in UK a few weeks ago, i noticed 2 of my girls, with same symptoms as yours. Just like you my first 8 chickens, had all their jabs. Because there
was plenty of space left in coop on the bottom, i noticed an add. For 4 pol warrens.
They were a good buy. They looked healthy enough when my husband collected them.
But within a few days i noticed one of the warrens ill. She too was sneezing on +off.
Within a few hours her eyes were closed. Got her straight out and brought her in the
house, in a large cage. She was not eating or drinking either. Thank goodness we had feed /water syringes. As my husband has an Aviary with parrots. So i had no option and
started giving her a drink through syringe. I then came on BYC read up a few topics.
i had nothing in in regards of meds. As they were all pol. The drink was just water with
splash Apple Cider vinegar.Truly believe she would pass, through the night. So stayed
up with her. Then following day, our ( LIL.) who is my light sussex, was also sneezing.
She also had one eye closed. Got another cage, and brought her in as well. Rang our vet
in which prescribed penicillin. Also bathed their eyes with warm water regular. Lily was on the mend, so much stronger. But Tootsie was real bad, especially her eyes, with her it
was the 2 of them. I stayed up every night, and nursed her on my lap. Also learn"t
a lot on here. Lily started looking for food, so scrambled an egg with a spot of olive oil.
Then Tbsl of grated up raw liver. ( i read that on here.) Lil scoffed it down, lol Her
eyes cleared up, Still kept her in with us for nearly 2 weeks. But our Tootsie bless
took way longer. It was hard, that first week as had no sleep bar for a couple of hours,
here and there. Although Tootsie"s eyes were still closed, i had her on my lap. And
started tapping the her dish. So it helped her to find it her food and drink. As you
know Chickens will react to anything red. As when we had the farm, we would get a red pen, for the chicks to learn. So i thought i would try it with Tootsie. And to see her
react, gave me the best feeling. lol They were both on penicillin for 4 days. Our vet
told us, he thinks the 4 warrens we had cheap, did not have any jabs. ugh Yet Lily
who did still caught it from her. They are both back with their sisters and doing well.
I am now a pensioner lol And when we had our farm, i always bred my own diffrent
breeds. Then every year, i would take loads of x battery hens in. When i look back,
we never lost our flocks to a fox, and i never experienced any that came down, like
Lil and Tootsie. Yes, was use to them egg bound or bullied, but this was totally new,
to me and also very scary. I have bought Poultry tonic, which i give once a week in their water. Also bought Nutri drops, in which i swear helped my girls get their appetites back. They also have Apple cider vinegar now and then. My 4 warrens have
also now had their jabs. Yesterday my husband picked up a few fresh egg noodles.
So i cooked it, then went out the garden, picked some fresh herbs. They loved it. lol
Hope you do not mind me sharing my story with you, as it sounded so similar to mine.
So glad you seen your vet, trust me within a few days she will be running rags around
you.lol If you find time, please keep us all posted, as we all love our girls and our boys.
lol Truth is this site is the best, so glad i found it everyone is so kind and caring.

Sorry now replying, weather been lovely here today.(uk) So done some gardening and
spent a lot of time with my girls. lol Well i can not answer your question, that it stays on the ground. ( JUST IN CASE I AM WRONG.) but the rest of the girls were fine. Course
i kept my eyes out, with all of them. But only 2 of them had it. I brought them in early,
so maybe i was lucky. It was hard, especially when i did not have a clue. Plus, it was the weekend in which, vet would cost treble. Then on Monday we rang him. It cost £25.00
just for him looking. They both had a jab each which cost us £15.00 each. He wreckons
the warren had not had any jabs, and she brought a virus with her. But only she was
ill. Her 3 sisters were fine. But our Lil, white light sussex, caught it from her. None of the others. We are also pensioners, so we have to watch the pennies. lol Vets are not cheap
but seeing them so ill, we knew they needed seeing a vet. Because our first 8 had all
their jabs, and 4 warrens did"nt. So had them done, to be on the safe side. Truth is
we could not afford it really. lol Another thing i done, was know VICK in a jar we use.
Well i got a cotton bud, and dabbed a little on each nostril. Also where their crops are.
The next morning i noticed their breathing was a lot better. Myself i think it helped.
Then with their eyes i kept bathing them, and used eye drops we use for ourselves.
That helped as well. Growing up i remember my Dad if any of our animals fell ill, he would
treat them with whatever we took. He always said, if they help humans they will help animals too.lol. Let me know how she is when you have time. Sometimes a lot of TLC
you give them helps as well. They just know, and makes them stronger. And you are
sure giving her plenty of that. lol :D

I never manage to get out of the vet for less than about $250. :hmm

Wow never, that is terrible. Not sure if you have a RSPCA. or PDSA. where you live.
They are vets, where you make a donation. We have used them loads of time. A few years ago our Shitzu was playing with our other dog. Sometimes they played rough, and our
Shitzu lost his eye through it. Our other dogs tooth caught it, by accident. Within 10mins
of it happening, his eye swoll up like a golf ball. We thought it would go down by the morning. But it did"t we knew our vet, would charge us loads. So we took him to the PDSA et. Within 5 mins of seeing him, he said he has lost his eye. We need to take it out.
You can imagine how we felt., we felt guilty for not taking him the night before. But he was not crying with pain, ect. Thought it would go down by the morning. But the vet told us, even if we took him when it happened they could not save it. So they done it straight away. Bless him, it cost us £480.00 which came as a shock, as we did not have it. But
they were brilliant, and let us pay each month. Can you imagine how much our vet would
have charged. ugh When we had our farm, our vet there also use to pay each month.
Which if anything happens it is not so bad. However when you have to find it straight out
is not easy. Ask around maybe they have similar vets, by you. Worth trying.:caf

It is the theory that the chickens remain carriers, but whether they do, or not....it's worth treating the sick ones. You may never have another case show up in any of your birds. Most chickens have an amazing immune system. They have to have.
