Hey everybody, about almost a week ago my olive egger started acting strange. She hadn’t layed an egg for about a week and she always has been a very active hen but she started walking very slowly and hiding under bushes to lay down. She’s been eating a bit less than usual and her crop feels quite empty but she still is eating. Her poop looks odd it’s been coming out a blackish colour with yellow and her comb has now turned pale. Yesterday too I noticed she’s began to shake her head a lot. I’ve been trying to feed her poultry cell in some scrambled eggs in hopes of it helping her but she isn’t too keen on eating it, I’ve also tried electrolytes in her water but she hasn’t been interested in it. If anyone could tell me what may be wrong with her and if there’s any measures I can take to help her it would be much appreciated. She is one of my favourite and kindest chickens and it breaks my heart to see her sick :(

Welcome To BYC

Can you please post photos of your hen and her poop?

She's stopped laying eggs and is walking very slowly. I'd give her 300mg Calcium Citrate+D3 now, then once daily for a week.
Hopefully she'll expel and egg or lash material.

Re-check her crop first thing in the morning before she eat/drinks to make sure it's emptying.

Shaking the head a lot. Can you get video of that? Upload to the BYC Gallery or Youtube.

Check inside her ears for any lice/mites or infection. Look inside the beak for any signs of canker or lesions.

Hi there! I just ordered the calcium and it should be here in 2 days so I’ll start giving that to her soon as possible. I got the videos and pictures for you. Today she seems a bit worse she’s been standing in place a lot and her poops changed to a runny yellowish white colour. Fortunately she is still eating tho but in very small amounts. She seems to be emptying her crop alright in the morning. I tried to check inside her beak but she wouldn’t let me and the head shaking made it more difficult. I checked her ears and they look like there is something on them so could that possibly be mites? I got a picture of that as well.

Hard to tell what's at the ears. If you move the tiny tuft of feathers at the ear, you should be able to see in the ear canal. Look for any signs of pus. The ear should be clean looking inside.

Is her face crusty too?

You may want to apply a thin layer of vaseline or vitamin E oil to the skin on her face, see if that helps.

Is there a way to get a clearer photo of the ear? Have someone hold her? Swaddling them in a towel or large cloth can help capture the wings and make them much easier to control while examining them or taking photos. Chickens are squirmy😅
