Sick Chicken, Is it Time to Cull?

I'm so sorry to hear that. I wish that I could help. But maybe someone will be able to. I''d hate to see you having to cull your chicken. No one wants to do that.

My chicken has the same exact symptoms/problems as yours does

I posted about it in "sick" section and 3horses was a big help. Unfortuntely, anything I have done for her, has not helped (vitamins, applesauce, yogurt, verifying no probs w/crop/vent). This will be the first chicken that I will have to cull and I'm dreading every moment of it. I just feel so bad for the poor thing, doesn't open her eyes, can't stand and is on the brink of death. Had I had the courage, I would/should have done it several days ago. Good luck to you and keep us updated

Thank you. There has still been no improvement. Her poop is clear and liquidy. What's odd to me in her seeming lack of balance. Even when she squats down it seems very awkward. I made up my mind to cull but she had a fortunate/unfortunate reprieve. I was unloading an excavator off a trailer to do some dirt work. The first thing I was going to do was dig a nice deep hole for the bird so my dogs can't dig her up. When I started to pull the excavator off, the brakes on the truck failed and it rolled down my driveway and crashed into my shed, knocking it off the foundations and nearly crushing my chicks. We picked the truck up from the dealer two days ago, brand new. Now it's totaled. The only bright side is that the brakes appear to be faulty so we may have an insurance claim. So anyways, the poor bird bought some more time, so if anybody has any more ideas, please let me know. Thanks!

Sorry about your new truck.

It sounds like the bird is not absorbing any food and all that is coming out is urates. She's weak from lack of nutrition, so she's wobbly.
She may be slowly starving to death. Not sure how much longer you want to wait........

Bad idea.Eating that chicken could be dangerous to your health.You don't want what she has,do you?I'd say let her live until she shows obvious sings that she's really sick.If that happens,cull her but don't eat her.I feel your pain though.My dog is sick and the vet thinks it's skin cancer.If it is cancer,she's going to have to be put down because it's going to cost too much money to take care of her.(Are they crazy?!?)Fingers crossed for your chicken and my dog.

I am giving sulmet--- which might be helping---I had two to die this Friday and others are showing signs of being sick---I even had to wash the face and eyes of two that were matted together and now they are open. I seperated the ones that look real sick but am giving meds to all. I called the 1 800 number for my state and it will be next week before they can come out and check. I also am giving them the medicated food. My tractor supply does not carry much for chickens and southern states sold me the last bottle of sulmet-- and its suppose to last me 8 days---- this is my first sick chickens- just started 10 months ago. Thanks to everyone again. I moved my chicks into a larger run today, so i've decided to leave the sick bird in the chick run. It has fresh food and water. If it doesn't consume anything on it's own by tomorrow, I will cull. I don't want to force feed it and just prolong the inevitable. If it can't support itself, I won't let it suffer. And I won't be eating it either way. My hens are for eggs. Thanks again!
