Hello, I just recently started caring for two chickens. Have had them for about 1.5 months. Just yesterday one of the chickens started looking and acting sick, but not sure what is going on. Her comb is very pale, she is barely eating or drinking. Mainly just stays in one spot. I did notice her shaking her head from time to time. She also has diarrhea. I’m very new to raising chickens, so need some ideas on how to help her. Thanks

Pictures of the birds will help?

Also what's their diet like?
They eat egg layer pellets, a separate bowl with grit and oyster shells. They have a chicken run area where they eat bugs, worms, plants, etc. We do not use any harmful pesticides or chemicals in the yard. So far the other chicken is acting normal.

You're right, she looks unwell. :hmm

Do you know her age or when was her last egg?

Get a feel of that crop.. is it squishy filled with fluid, hard filled with something. or flat and empty.. Do this now but also first thing in the morning before she has access to any feed or water in order to assess crop function to see if it might be blocked, sour, or slow.

She looks like a red sex link.. often known for "early" reproductive issues including tumors and cancer.

Also possible.. she could be approaching molt.. which severely diminishes some birds response and behavior.

Is she being mated bald at your place or her prior home?

Hope you get answers and she recovers soon! :fl

Not sure of her age. I checked her crop yesterday and it was full and squishy. I checked again this morning and pretty much the same size and feel. For a day and a half I’ve been giving her a little oregano and pesto with oil, basil, and garlic. Yesterday evening the color is starting to come back to her comb and this morning she seemed a little more alert.

I do see the color difference already! :yesss:

So that sounds like slow or sour crop, perhaps it's passing on it's own (or perhaps with your assistance) already/finally. Here is a good article..
