Sick chicken w/ gape worm!

FYI Safeguard isnt flubendazole, it is fenbendazole.

Fenbendazole is effective on gapeworms though, no? I thought I just saw that on the msu cares....(sorry went to pull it)Yes- http://msucares.com/poultry/diseases/disparas.htm

Still
, I cannot seem to figure out a dose thast's appropriate with the stock my local TSC carries. Any good advice as to where to get effective wormers fast? I don't know what is wrong with my chicken, but I don't have faith that the wormer I used did a proper job and the head shaking and fretting is disturbing....

Opps! I guess i spelt it wrong! I Meant fenbendazole!

She has been diagnosed with gape worm by our vet and her even showed me the worm within her throut, she is already doing better after just worming her, and keeping her comfortble away from the rest of the flock. Were you referring to the rest of the flock or Millie?

How do you dose this type of the safeguard?

Dosage is orally 1cc for giants, 3/4cc for large fowl, 1/2cc for standards, 1/4cc for smaller birds. If you're NOT dealing with gapes, redose again in 10 days.

I think I am going through the same thing. Rocky is a little Serama roo and is doing the whole gasping for air sometimes squeaking as well as twitching his neck. His comb is pale and he is doing nothing but laying around. I had no idea what to do from my little fellow and ended up getting Ivermectin just a pea size bit down his throat. (no stores around here had anything else) my question is since I have went ahead and given him this should I not give him anything else now? I did look down his thoat and see nothing but I guess that does not mean anything. Any suggestions...

I went out last night just after dark to lock up my chickens at night only to discover My Mille Fleur Booted bantam huddled under the coop next to the waterer, not moving a muscle! At first i thought she was dead. but i picked her up to check her out and she was gasping for air, I immediately knew she had gape worm from reading up on it just recently. So i took off my jacket and wrapped her up in it since she was obviously freezing. Took her to my hubby and then he took her inside the house to warm her up. I went back out to the coop and counted my chickens like i always do! only to discover that a fair amount of them had blood on them, no wounds. My Roo had blood all down his hackles but none on face comb or any place else no wounds either, now i immediately thought they had attacked mille in her weakened state! She had blood on her face, as i checked for any signs of fowl play outside the coop i found a whole that was dug from outside the run about the size of maybe a rat, the next morning i looked in the daylight before letting anyone out that their was blood leading away from the coop starting from the whole that was dug. since i am not missing any chickens and none of the other chickens have wounds i can assume that the culprit came in with the intent to steal and egg or have chicken dinner but lost!
Mille is pretty bad and this a.m. all my chickens in the coop have signs of gape worm, everyone has been treated with flubendazole, but what else can i do to help Mille? She has blood around her eyes and comb her comb has been coated with Blu-Kote but i am worried about her eyes. What can I put on and around them that is safe for her? already she is more active even just hours of worming her to rid of the Gape worm, but she cannot open her eyes to see the food or water so i am giving fluid with syringe. their are no other signs of scratches on any other part of her body, but i worry that she could have gotten something from the unknown intruder.
I will do anything to save her, I have already done what I can for her coop mates and everything for her that I know of!
Please help! Thanks!
My Poor Girl!

Search and do "THE Q-TIP GAPEWORM TEST" to ease your mind.. I do not believe they have gapeworm.... but, the test is easy for YOU to do.. so, test her, to ease your mind. Test several. And, there are few, very few wormers that treat tapeworm and/or gapeworm. You can search (here on BYC) for info on Gapeworm, testing for gapeworm, the Q-tip test, worming with Valbazen (Albendazole) (liquid, oral dosing), search "giving oral medications", evidence of predators, etc. Others in a flock will attack and weak and sickly, down flockmate... but, I agree with the others, looks like you have a predator, need to make sure your coop and run are predator proof. You might read up on the predators topic as well. Or, search for predator proofing.
I'm sorry.. this is scary for you, I know. One step at a time, take care of the injured, and secure the coop, get rid of the predator, or at least keep "him" out.
There is an antibiotic eye ointment available at the feed store (or from a vet).... yellow and white box, tiny, tiny tube, pricey... use it on the inner side of the outer lid a couple times a day, so that when she closes her eyes it is distributed across the eye, into the eye by her. Use clean hands in case you need to 'give it a light rub' to get her to close her eye. Blu Kote (careful not to get it into the eyes or nostrils)... and Neosporin for cuts. TLC, warm, quiet, and dry.
I am glad the predator lost this battle, but if 'he' got a taste, he will be back.
Take care and best of luck.

If he is just lying around and you cannot see anything down his throat like a red Y shaped worm then he could have a Respiratory infection, I am currently treating the rest of my flock who don't seem to have gape worm with Safe Gaurd any how as a precaution since my infected hen was in with them, I am also using duramyacin in their water, their has been no ill affects on them and they are already more cheery and active then before, and since I have to discard any eggs because of the wormer and Medicane it's no big deal to me. I do believe the rest of the flock became stressed after fighting off their attacker.
You can do the Q-Tip test to ease your mind if you do this and nothing comes out you may have a bad case of respritory infection in him, I had on hen that had it so bad it nearly killed her. You can always ask a vet if its o.k. to worm him and give him some other medicane.
All birds will react differently so don't take my word that it is safe, but for my chickens they all seem to be fine.
Sorry for the spelling the new system won't let me spell check!
