My rhode island red is about 2 years old and was lethargic and not eating so we knew she was sick. We wanted to separate her from the rest of the chickens in case she was contagious. My husband thought he knew what she had and we treated her with antibiotics for close to a week. The diarrhea has been the constant for over 3 weeks, pale comb and now comb separating from her head. She is drinking and eating, we gave her probiotics and electrolytes in her water. She is in my basement in a penned area with a waterproof cloth down with newspaper on top. We bought worm treatment yesterday and gave it to her. Still no change

I’m sorry she’s sick. Lots of people struggling today with their flocks. Are you someplace super cold?

Could you post some photos for us of this girl ?

Believe it or not,
“Diarrhea splats” tell the tale in a big way, and some pictures of her and her comb issue as well.

Thank you so much. Here is a photo from today. Her comb is definitely worse than the photo I took 2 weeks ago.

Yes it is cold here but she has been in my basement for over 3 weeks. I have a heater on for her today and used one when she was worse. (not eating much at all)

Oh my! She looks miserable, poor thing.

She’s evidently pale and puffed up.
I have even more questions I’m afraid!

First I can’t zoom the picture.
Any chance you could get closer and give me a good one of her face/comb?

Second, don’t forget the poop pics if you can get one.
Nice and clear please.
If you’re using your phone to take pictures it’s best if you do NOT use the zoom feature.
Just get close, like within a foot or so then tap the screen where you want the camera to focus.
That allows US to really zoom in from our end.

Next,
her crop looks huge, or is that the camera angle?
Would you feel that area for me -her crop- and tell me if it feels:
Empty and flat?
soft or hard?
Dough-y?
Big and poofy like a water balloon?

Is this girl currently laying?
Did she stop because of season or molt?
Or just since this illness?

Can you remember the antibiotic you husband gave her, the dosage, and for how long?

If she gets better and I hope she does, when you return her to the flock she may get picked on because they will see her a new bird and she will be the lowest in the pecking order.
They don't recognise her as their old friend, to them she is a new bird, shame you can't put her in the coop or in sight of them.
I'm not trying to be clever I read this a while ago where a lady had a sick bird and had it away from the flock, when it recovered she put her back but they bullied it.

It’s better for a chicken this sick to be in a safe/ warm/ quiet and dim environment for a few days of R&R.

When she recovers the OP can use the puppy pen she’s currently using to get her right up alongside her run or outdoor area for the flock to become reacquainted for a day or so.
Reintegration into a flock is what’s it called and is generally very successful if it’s done incrementally and with patience.
