Hello, I posted yesterday but this time with photos. My faverolle's eyes started watering about a week and half ago, occasionally sneezing. Now she will not open her eyes and when she does for a flit second, they are all watery and red. She is not eating and makes guttural sound as if she has mucus in her lungs. She seems to be breathing a lot through her mouth. Her poop is greenish and watery. Does anyone have an idea how I can help make her better ? She is a beautiful girl and I would hate losing her.

It appears that she has a respiratory disease. Infectious bronchitis, mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG,) and a few others are common. Have you added any new birds to the flock recently where she could have been exposed to a carrier? How is your coop ventilation? Is there any ammonia odor or mold? I would rinse her eyes with saline eye was, and apply a small dab of Terramycin eye ointment into each eye twice a day. If you have any Tylan 50 injectable, you could give 1.50 ml orally very slowly 3 times a day for 5 days. Offer water often, and you can also make her feed watery in a small bowl offered up to her beak often while her eyes are sore.

Can you see your vet and ask for an antibiotic which treats MG? In the UK, you would need a prescription for Tylan/tylosin, Denagard, oxytet or others. You should be able to make saline for an eye wash or buy some eye wash at the chemist. Saline is made by boiling 1 liter/quart of water with 2 tsp of salt. Cool and store in a clean jar.

Thank you so much, ordering some Terramycin right this minute !

Sorry to hear you chicken is not doing well. I had a couple hens present with similar symptoms last late summer/early fall. I suspected a respiratory infection/disease. Both my chickens died, so obviously I was not able to help them.

But, I did clean out my coop thoroughly and made sure all the water and feed was clean. None of my other chickens got sick, so I consider that a partial success. Personally, I did not think the coop, water or feed was the problem, but it never hurts to clean up everything just in case. We had a terrible drought last summer, and I think it was the extreme heat with no rainfall that just wore down some of my chickens. Also, one of the hens had been broody and I think that weakened her a lot.

I hope you can help your hen. Please update the thread with your progress and let us know what, if anything, worked or not.

Sorry to hear about your chickens and thanks goodness you save the rest. I am going to do a deep clean tomorrow. Thank you for the advice.

Update on my chicken. After 2 weeks of hand feeding , saline eye drop and Terramycin eye ointment, my Faverolles survived. I did not give her any oral antibiotics, just VetRx. However, she seems to have lost partial eyesight. She can see where food is but takes her a few tries to peck at the right place. Her eyes are only half opened. Has anyone come across this before and can recommend anything? She is getting bullied by other chickens and I really feel for her.
