Sick Chicken

700

For those interested, my hen is still alive.

She has been inside for 7 days now.
Today she is eating and drinking again, a sort of chicken roller coaster (one day looks like she is going to die, then perks up).

I don't thinks it's coccidiosis, Marek's, or sour crop.
She does not have any paralysis. My husband thinks it's dehydration.
I have know idea.

I have given her antibiotics, electrolytes (separate from antibiotic), probiotic, a bath (x2), heat, offered different kinds of foods, a little grit, added a little DE to her crumble for deworming, checked her over for lice and mites (negative).
She is honestly doing the best with electrolytes, bread, and applesauce. Today she looked okay, though still weak. She was standing. Diarrhea seems to be resolved. She has poo balls now, which is a tremendous improvement. Her crop feel fine, not soft or hard. Empty, since she is eating just a little, but empty by morning.
I took her out for some fresh air before the cold weather hit again.

??

All my other hens are still fine.

Thank you for the update, Freedom.I have been praying for your hen. I posted after you on this thread for my friend who had similar issues with one of her hens. Forgive me for jumping in with you. I thought any posts would benefit us both. Blessings.

It's so good to hear that she is alive and having some good days, and I hope that she continues to get better. Thank you for the update.

Hey i have the same sort o problem. My hen would normally hide underthings in the coop, but was having a bit of a problem with her leg, this morning i went in and the other hens and roo were walking over her, like she was a door mat :(. shes sitting on my lap right now all cuddly, ive been hand feeding her water and vitamins/minerals, she can hardly stand, and keeps closing her eyes. she seems really relaxed on my lap though. shes always been the calmest, kindest, one of my hens. even opening her beak seems hard for her right now. any suggestions. And i hope your little hen is ok with the bullies ;)

Sorry to hear about your best girl :(

i know my hen has done the best with save a chick electrolytes in her water, probiotic mixed with applesauce and crumble (oatmeal consistency), and bread (just to keep her eating). I gave her the bread because the people I got her from gave their chickens bread. Not the first choice for my flock, but I kind of went back to basics for her. Bread was her baby treat/comfort food. right? Anyway, on the tough days I would would throw pieces in her water bowl so she would go after them and get water at the same time.
I was out of ideas.
I also put a heater in the room with her. The warmth seemed to help her along also.

I have tried so many things and I still don't really know what was wrong with her. I researched everything. Not really sure why my girl had so much diarrhea; She is still sick but I feel like she is beginning to come around. It going to be another week before I am totally convinced she will live. She is still wobbly and her comb is pale.
Only thing I can think was dehydration. Its been tough this winter. She is the lowest in the pecking order and I think the other birds may have bullied her from food and drink.

How is your hen doing? How old is she?

I' glad your girl is doing better!!! i hope she pulls through! :) crossing my fingers for the both of us.
My girl seems a bit more awake but not energetic at all. i made her a nest from an old towel so she's cozy and supported and not falling over anymore! still feeding her with a dropper but im soaking some bread in water and vitamins for her to eat easier!! great idea thanks! She'll be 3 this year. She's in our living room so he's pretty comfortable i think. I saw the diarrhea picks, really green. :/ my girls has only pooped a little (twice, really soft) in the last 12 hours...

she seems to get a bit livelier when i hold her or pick her up.

My hen is down again :(
Can anyone tell me if de worming her this late in the game will do her in?

I am really reaching here.

Freedom- how is she doing today? I had three hens recently die of the same symptoms and now have 6 more with poopy bums...not sure what's wrong! Seems to take about a week or so before they die...hope yours is doing better!
