I lost a chicken today and I don’t know why. She was acting weird for over a week, she looked fat or fluffy and just wasn’t herself. I did some research and thought she was egg bound so I treated her for that and it turned out she wasn’t. I also thought she had fluid in her crop but it didn’t feel like it. So she was alive when I went out this morning and while tending to them I turned around and she was gone. I haven’t a clue what was wrong.

Sometimes chickens just die... you could do a necropsy and see what her internal organs look like. That may help to determine. Many times when it happens over a short period of time it's liver related or tumors or a bad heart. Did she lose a lot of weight before she died? It's disheartening when this happens. Sorry for your loss. Watch your other birds to make sure they don't start doing what the one you lost did.

:welcome

Sorry for your loss. Chickens will 'hide' an illness or injury for as long as possible so the other birds in the flock don't pick on them (they're pretty ruthless about that). Because of that, they can be ailing for a while before we see that they are having a problem and by the time it shows up to us, the bird is too far gone to do much to help them.

Sometimes no matter what we try to do to help them, we lose them and that's always frustrating and sad. It's just the way things happen.

Keep a close eye on your other flock members, check them all over carefully. If you see anything out of the ordinary (or even suspect something isn't quite right), post over on the ER forum with all the details you have noticed. Hopefully someone there can give you a hand with trying to treat them.Emergencies / Diseases / Injuries and Cures

Best wishes to you, I hope everything goes alright for you and your flock.
