I found my hen on the road and she would of got run over if I didn’t take her home. She was very thin her chest bone was sticking out. She just stood there with her wings low and eyes closed. He poo was like water. I tempted her with all sorts of good foods but one morning, I thought I was going to lose her so I rang the vet and put her on a dose of antibiotics. She soon got better until she looked and acted normally. After 10 days of antibiotics. I stopped and she continued to make progress. Yesterday, I saw that her pop was watery again and she just stands by the water and is constantly drinking. Today she is not so keen on food but when encouraged will eat a bit. I keep her in a room where she is very happy. She spends time outside in the day and loves to sunbathe. I found her three weeks yesterday. She has not laid an egg. She is not keen on other chickens but is happy to follow me around the garden and I have to dig up worms for her as she doesn’t tend to scratch around herself. I don’t know her history so I’m not sure if her age etc. Should I put her on another course of antibiotics.? Her pop is very watery now but when she’s eating it clearing fluid with dark bits in it.

Hi noahcats. This must be so stressful. My chicken stopped laying a month back, she was the best layer, her vent had dropped I thought she was egg bound. I've soaked in Epsom salts and cider vinegar this past week, then yesterday I read it's a good idea to add cider vinegar to food as well as water incase of water infections about 1 ml per chicken. Luckily I have a friend that has provided me with goat yogurt so my hens get that to. This morning her vent is back up and she looks so much better. I don't mind if she no longer lays eggs just as long as she is ok.

Good on you for trying to save her! Keep persevering. Something similar happened to my hen, she was fine then disappeared. I found her under a wood pile and thought she was broody, I gave her food and water but she didn’t eat much. After a week or so I realised she wasn’t sitting on eggs at all. She had dark green watery poop and was very thin. My vet is a poultry vet and said the green poop is a sign of anorexia and the breaking down of the digestive track. When the urates are green the kidneys are breaking down. They kept my girl for the weekend, crop fed her and gave her subcut fluids. I kept her isolated but still free range as I found she would peck a little but often on the grass, she wasn’t interested in her favourite foods. The vet said encourage high protein, wet foods. It took two months, but she is back to normal now. The vet said it could be gastro from bacteria or a virus and she will get better, or it will be cancer. Luckily it was gastro in my case.
