I have a hen that is not eating this a.m. I did see her drink. She is walking slow. Sitting in the corner on the coop with her eyes closed. Her wattle is very pale looking like a pink color not red. I saw her poop and it is just like water but red. Could it be blood? I have been feeding them alot of tomato's the last 3 days. Could this be the cause?
Thanks
Rebecca

I need some help from any one. Also she will lay down and pick at the dirt. When I was looking her over her crop is very full filling? Anything from anyone?

Hi there. Sorry to hear about your hen. I would definitely separate her. I'm going to look up information about the symptom of her red poop. Tomatoes can do that, but the fact that she is pale is a little concerning. I'll be back in touch. Or, hopefully someone will respond meanwhile.

Ok I just went out there to check on her and I found something that came out of one of them. I dont know what end but not something that a chicken is meant to eat. I had the tomato's in a walmart bad by the coop. I am thinking that maybe she tried to eat it? It kind of looked like it was? How can I fix this? If this is what is wrong?

Did she try to eat the bag? If she is throwing up, then maybe her crop is impacted? You said it was full. Are you sure the red poop is actually poop or is it vomit?

It is poo and I have not seen her throwing up. I did find what looks like some plastic from a bag. I did not see it come out and do not know what end it came out of. Or what chicken it came from for that matter.

Sorry about your girl. If you go to the sticky at the top of this topic you'll see some questions to answer that will help the chicken gurus answer your questions and help your bird.

Until then, I would separate her, encourage fluids, especially vitamin laced fluids and try to keep her quiet. Dribble fluids along her beak if she's reluctant to drink although you said she was drinking.

Good luck and best wishes. I hate it when they're sick.

2) What is the behavior, exactly. / Not seen her eat food, did see her eating dirt, she is drinking, wanting to just lay around and not do much, pale wattles, moving slower than normal.
3) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma. / nothing
4) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation. / may have eaten plastic
5) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all. / today some dirt and some water
6) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc. / like water and red. dont know if it is blood or from tomato's that she has been eating.
7) What has been the treatment you have administered so far? / nothing
8 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet? / treat myself
9) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.
10) Describe the housing/bedding in use / straw and in an out door coop, dirt
