sick chicken

She mostly lays around the coop in the shade. She Definately is not broody we have had that happen with other hens and she has no anger about being taken out of the box or put outside she is just exhausted and what would you do if she is egg bound?
If you are sure she is not broody, please read the article I left for you in the above post. Do not wait long.

What is egg binding? it sounds frightening, what do we have to look out for? does it happen often?
Egg binding is a very life threatening situation. When an egg is passing from the Uterus and out through the vent, the passage to the intestines is shut off. This keeps bacteria from the intestines out of the oviduct. But if there is a stuck egg, this passage is completely shut off and the bird can not eliminate. And accompanied with the bird straining they can literally push their insides out of their vent. It is called Prolapse.

Eggs gets stuck for a few reasons, the number one cause is dehydration. If the oviduct is dry, eggs don't move. The lack of calcium in the diet is the next cause. Calcium not only puts on a hard shell but it gives the contractions in the uterus and oviduct to push that egg out. So if they are lacking, the egg gets stuck.

Other issues pertaining to health can cause egg binding, but these two I listed are the most common causes. If left untreated the bird dies and fairly quick as well.

Read my article on Egg Binding. I left it in a post back and it is in my signature. It will tell you all you need to know. :)

Gosh you know such a lot about chickens - if I ever have a problem again I will call on you. Do you think the above sick chicken is badly deydrated from what you say, it sounds like it to me. Shame its awful having a sick chicken they go down so fast, when they are sick

@valleygal67 TwoCrows has left you some excellent advice and a very informative article to read. I hope she recovers soon :fl
Wishing you the very best of luck :hugs

I stuck my finger on about to my second knuckle and it went into her poop shot because she pooped when I struck it in and it had poop on the glove that's good news right? So No egg stuck. Felt No egg at all but she is sleeping in her nesting box until I can get her set up in the crate this afternoon.i think antibiotics are the way to go from here.thanks for the help any insight from here would be great

They can get dehydrated on hot summer days especially if they don't have access to water being out free ranging. Water fonts get dumped over or the water gets too foul to drink. Hard to say about this bird since I can't see her or don't know her circumstances. :)

Good that she doesn't have a stuck egg.

What color is her comb? Is it pale at all? Feel her breast bone compared to the others....is it really thin and sharp? These symptoms along with what you described her poop earlier could mean she has worms.

Have you wormed her recently? Worms eat all the food that the bird comsumes. Eventually the worms clog up the entire intestinal tract strangulating it and killing the bird.

So if she fits into any of these descriptions, I would start with a worming. It is quick and easy. Get some Safeguard Liquid Goat Wormer or Valbazen. The Safeguard will be easier to locate in such a hurry. TSC carries this in the horse section. Use a syringe with no needle and put 1/2 cc down her throat once a day for 3 days. This will kill pretty much every worm except some species of tape worm. The Valbazen is the better wormer here, but you will have to order it on line and I wouldn't wait that long.

I wouldn't start with any antibiotics until after you worm her. She could have an infection but generally you would see secondary infections such as runny nose, watery eyes as well.

Keep us posted! Oh and good job on the checking for a stuck egg!! :)

I can't advise anymore I'm not an expert and I am sorry for you but do listen to Two Crows, even if you have wormed another go won't hurt and also if the others are not sick I wouldn't go with the anti biotics just yet - go with the water - thinking of you
