Hi
I have a 2 1/2 year old ex bat. She is very lethargic, sleeping all the time, drinking and eating a little, diahorrea and not laying. I have checked her crop, her vent, for mites, scaly leg, she’s not sneeze or has a runny nose. I am at a loss as to what it could be. She’s been wormed, had multi vits and electrolytes. Any suggestions please?
Thanks

Cocci?
Try 2 tsp of Corid in one gal of water.

How long have you had her and what has your weather been like? Coccidiosis is a possibility but since she is an ex battery hen she may be suffering reproductive malfunction which is sadly all too common in such birds over 2 years old.
Can you check her abdomen for any swelling. This is best done by cupping your hand between her legs and feeling for any fullness or bloat there and just below her vent. Compare with a healthy bird that you know is actively laying eggs. Is she soiling herself... ie poop sticking to the feathers below her vent or is she bald below her vent. Can you post a photo of her back end and another of her general demeanour.
At this time of year as we approach moult they sometimes get depleted of calcium and produce a thin shell or shell less egg which is very difficult for them to pass and makes them very uncomfortable for a day or two. Is she standing with her lower back hunched and tail down. If there is no abdominal swelling this would be my best bet. She might benefit from a direct calcium supplement and a soak in a warm Epsom Salts bath..... make sure the water is not too deep.... the idea is for her to be able to touch the bottom but the water be up to her vent. Give her vent a gentle rub to help remove any caked on poop and carefully insert a gloved finger an inch to clean and ease the vent open. If it is a shell less egg you will not feel it, but even if it doesn't help her to pass it, it pay help her to release some backed up poop which will make her feel a bit more comfortable. A photo of her vent area taken after her soak will give us an idea if she has any obvious swelling.

Hi
Thanks for the advice. I’ll get a picture later. Her poo is like water and she does get it stuck to her, I’ve bather her twice now. The last egg she aid was shell less, only the yolk and nothing since. Her abdomen doesn’t feel abnormal and we have had extremely hot weather here recently. I’ll try the Epsom salt bath and hope that helps. I’d rather try everything myself before taking her to the vets.
