Sick dog

Geeze well I'm SO glad she pulled through but I have take back my strong stance against going to the vet. My Leonberger stopped eating and started vomiting Saturday. By Sunday she was still a mess and I took her to the vet this morning. Her bloodwork will likely show a Pancreatic attack which is deadly if not treated right. Thankfully I know how to treat it so it stopped at bloodwork where some people would have had a bill twice what mine is. It's a very personal choice to roll the dice on whether a dog will make it through sickness, or not. I don't think you even consider buying a Leonberger if you're not up to big bills, it's just different. I don't regret going to the vet so I apologize if I sounded disrespectful towards vet's in my earlier post. I think there are good ones, and not so good ones, it's just how it is.

We are running a small farm on a shoestring budget. With drought and the cost of feed the highest I have ever seen it in my lifetime. If I had thousands of $$ to spare my overall opinion may and probably would be different. We got all our sheep through so far without parasite overload by feeding in feeders and keeping their faces out of the dirt. Our pasture and everyone's around me is not just dry, its dead and will take a massive investment this fall (if there is rain) in seeding to even have a hope of partial recovery. There is only so much money to go around we are not cruel or uncaring owners we are just in a bad spot right now and realistic about it. We discussed selling off ewes a few months ago and came to the conclusion that we would do everything we could to prevent that, and we did. We cut our cell service and hve been eating a TON of chicken. If you saw our sheep you would not even think there was a drought they look wonderful. They will go into heat this fall healthy hopefully spring will turn around for us and everyone around us. I hate to see my neighbors in distress.

It's simply amazing how tough farm dogs can be. Almost too stubborn to let something bring them down before they're good and ready.

So glad she's doing better!
