TMarie, we do need to be aware of salmonella. The CDC must publish the most conservative guidelines or risk lawsuits, in my opinion.

So if I had a wee one, I would supervise closely, wash thoroughly, and feed my babies - human and feathered - the healthiest food I could, give them fresh air, sunshine (as available), exercise and loads of love. Oh, and nothing, also in my opinion, smells better than a clean duck or duckling.
Again, you need to be comfortable. People can pick up germs from animals. And vice versa.
