SICK GOOSE!! fAST HELP PLEASE!!

How does her weight feel to you? Can you feel her breast bone?

I am moving this to emergencies so you can find more help. There is a sticky at the top of the Emergencies section. Please take a look and answer any applicable questions you can.

The slime on her back is odd. Do you have dogs around that might have been chewing on her?

When you checked her vent, what did you find? Discharge, yolk, egg shell bits? Is her abdomen swollen and hard? If you run your hand down her neck does there feel like an obvious lump or blockage?

jojo@rolling acres farm :

lilcrow - Have you tried taking your chickens/geese to a large animal vet or a pet vet? A large animal vet may be your best option- they deal with cattle, sheep, goats, horses, etc. They may be able to help. Another option is to contact a vet that treats parrots.

I care about both you and your goose - keep us posted.

Thank you Jojo, but I wasn't the one that started the thread, I just kind of jumped in here uninvited.

Thx, Terrielacy for moving this!! In my haste I seemed to have missed this forum.

Update:
I just checked again all the things you asked Terrie.

1st thing is, no there are dogs or animals chewing on her. My geese beat up dogs..lol. Just my dogs though. No other dogs can get into the yard & they made short work of the local tomcat.

Her neck & throat don't seem to have any blockage or strange lumps.

Her weight seems normal for her...You have to understand, you don't pick up "Mouthy" often!! We call her Mouthy because well, uhm, she is mouthy. She will tell you her opinion, with force if need be..lol,

Her abdomen does not seem hard or swollen. I can feel her breast bone & all seems normal...Again, remember, you don't pick up Mouthy without consequences!!

Now for the encouraging part...

When I just now checked her vent(remember consequences!! Talk about those later..lol), all seemed fine. No blood, eggshells, yolk, or even poop. Note: I still wouldn't lick my finger though!!

Now for the consequences part.

As I checked her vent, I had to pick her up..She had moved all eggs under her. Anyhow She protested as i did this cruel thing to her. I had moved her 30ft from her eggs & stuffed my finger in her vent. Needless to say, she did not like this!! LOL!! When I finally put her down on the ground, she suddenly got energy, ran over 20ft. & bit my wife between the legs..LOL!!
That was encouraging because we have not seen her move at all, yet alone that fast in 3 days now. SHE WAS FAST!!LOL!!

She honked & honked & then went & sat back on the eggs.

I was starting to think about her just being broody but, it still worries me that hse lays with her neck just str8 out & like she has no energy to raise it.

Sorry for making this so long.

Thanks again to all the replies

I just saw your post. I know nothing about geese. I am so sorry. I am glad to hear that she is doing better. I hope and pray she makes a speedy recovery. Good luck. Sending lots of hugs to you , your wife and the goose Mouthy.

Thanks Terrilhb for the hugs...We love them, although, Mouthy don't like them much but, we give them to her when we can..lol!!

This is infuriating!! If find find anything that half resembles how she is acting, there is no cure or treatment & most of those are for chicks or goslings, not a 1yo goose.

Even the hatchery i got her from can't give me an answer.
Guess I can only cross my fingers & pray for the best!!

I will be no help to you other than to encourage you to keep the faith that Mouthy will regain her health. I don't know a thing about geese, but have been keeping an eye on your post hoping to see that she has bounced back. I would say that Mouthy has a lot of people rooting for her! Please keep us posted and I hope that this is perhaps just her way of going broody. (Don't know about the whole slime thing)

2 questions:

1. Is it possible she has bird lice/mites? My chicken looked like she was caked in mud but it was mites. I checked and checked cause I knew something was wrong with her but until I gave her a bath I didn't see them. She was listless and just layed around.

2. Is the chick starter medicated? I think I might have heard that medicated feed isn't good for geese.

I feel for your wife on the love bites. My geese are grouchy and when I try to touch them I end up covered in bruises.

Thank You All for your hugs & encouragement & help!!

Elieugene6: I have looked for lice & mites(as well as she'll let me).. I'm still not sure as to that part with BACK feathers..It is only on her back, not front!! She feels crusty..kinda like she rolled in mud..When I can pet her, I'm not seeing any eggs or dandruff so to speak, rubbing off. It's more like rubbing an oily thing that got dropped in the dirt. Feathers on her back are rough & gritty feeling. But also with an oily residue.

You made me think though!!

Checked my feed & it is medicated!!! I was told(& read)that my feed wasn't medicated) But feed company switched suppliers & now it is!! Darn!! I read something along those lines today..(other days also, but I wont go into how scrambled my brain is lately). I did ask something like that in my first post & was thinking along those lines also..Thank You so Much For Your Input..JUST MIGHT BE THE CHANGING factor in my problem.

Now that I THINK that I might have found the problem, can anybody tell me how to fix it? Will she be OK after I change her feed back to hen scratch?
Is there another feed I should feed her?
I mostly have Nutrena & Purina here

Thanx so much to those who have helped & contributed!!!

I can only hope to find a cure!!!

She could just be broody - I have two white Chinese females and they will let me pick them up when they are on the nest. I have to get them off at night and they do just stretch their neck out and it's the only time I can pick them up. The slime is a little weird. Maybe she's sleeping under a chicken and quit bathing because of the broodiness.

Hope it works out. Some people say the medicated feed is ok for geese. IDK?
