Sick Goose - Lethargic/Tired

Yeah her stools are basically a little green loose. Not neon green but a dark green. I assume from the little bit of peas she is eating.

I'm wondering now though she was eating a load of dirt, and if she was already stressed and maybe the parasites/bacteria took off. Is there anything over the counter anymore for antibiotics? I have some corid but idk if they even helps with this at all.

I also turned on my brooder lamp far away, and it seems like she's perked up a bit. Still not eating feed but nibbling at corn/cucumbers/peas in water.

You can try mixing her feed in water to make a soupy mash, that can help get them used to eating again.

“fish” antibiotics and pigeon antibiotics are available in a few places online, some I keep around are Tylosin for various digestive and respiratory infections, SMZ TMP for coccidia and various bacterial infections, Toltrazuril for coccidia “Corid works too,” metronidazole for clostridium and giardia, Baytril and amoxicillin for upper resporatory infections, and doxy for whatever.

Do you know how long it took your guy to get back to eating?

She was exciting eating earlier and I think overly engorged herself and threw up a bit. Otherwise alert.

Roxby took several weeks and he had repeated bouts of it. Why is because I had a lot of trouble narrowing down what was wrong with him and not realizing he had a complex disease. I would treat him for one thing not realizing that he had multiple infections at once, giardia, clostridium, and coccidia and it ripped his intestinal lining up to the point that even though I was tube feeding feed and vitamins him he wasn’t really getting any nutrients out of it. He had lost all movement in his hind legs and lived in my room in a baby pool lined with towels, it was only after I gave him three meds at once did he finally start improving but it took awhile for him to regain movement and then to walk. How quickly the recovery is depends on how severe the deficiency was.

If your goose is eating that’s a very good sign, Roxby completely refused to eat anything at all because of how horrible he felt and had to tube fed him. It’s hard to say how quickly your goose recovers but it could be a few days, maybe a week. If she’s eating on her own that means she’s feeling much better.


Also antibiotic mixes are great if you’re not quite sure what’s going on but you’re starting to notice your birds aren’t feeling well, you can cover a few bases at once with them. The drawback I’ve found with them though is the concentration isn’t usually right, especially for tylosin if something like clostridium is the problem. With clostridium perfringen infections geese take the max dosage given to dogs because it leaves the body so quickly in geese, diluting it in a mix means that you have to give them more for it to be effective which may be a overdose of whatever else it’s mixed with.

Yeah she did eat a bit, but mostly just drinking a bunch and eating some cucumbers in her regular water. I got some game food (30%) and will get the broadspectrum anti just as a preventative. Would you pull the vitamins from the water as well when giving this stuff?
