Sick goose

She barely drinks and is not showing much interest in food but judging from her poop/pee she must have taken in fluids. (My cat once was lethargic and stopped drinking as far as I could tell. Vet said cat was hydrated....) I don't have any liquid calcium. I put out oyster shells a few days ago and noticed the pile getting smaller. What is the liquid calcium for? I do have stuff like Tums or Mylanta.

Crush some Tums and put it into her water it will give her some extra calcium. I'm sorry I didn't see your post sooner I'm subscribed but it didn't show up.

Have goose floating in warm water. She did a bit of feather preening. Clipped some grass and let it float. She immediately ate some.

Alright perking up!! I asked livininbrazil to look at your thread too she has many geese and hopefully can add some insight

Brilliant, she´s eating! With mine, if they´re ever off-colour, I put some medicine in a small bowl, add a little water and put peices of lettuce into it. As they eat the lettuce they´ll take in some of the medicine/ACV/antibiotic if needed. If she´s picking up I´d say she´s prob not egg-bound, otherwise she´d just go down-hill. She may have simply got a chill. Is she shivering? Are her feathers all stood up on her neck to try to keep the heat in? If not , she´s prob not too bad, as I get the idea from your posts that she´s slowly improving. Maybe try the foods that have plenty of good stuff in them that she likes to build her back up again, and keep her warm for a few days. It seems one of the worst things for geese can be things that they pick up and swallow, they being so inquisitive, that can be terribly dangerous for them...tiny bits of plastic, etc....the other day I discovered that my neighbour´s kids had been throwing over bits of toys, CDs, etc to annoy each other, and there were my geese testing it all out! If they swallowed any of that it could be very bad news. I hope yours hasn´t eaten anything bad for her. It´s a very good sign that she´s eating, though.

I never even thought of her eating something she shouldn't, and here I was just this morning finding things that had washed up from the last heavy rain we had. One reason I thought of egg bound is she is at the age of just starting to lay, Thanks livin.

Well, egg-bound was the first thing I thought of, too, but since she´s already picking up without an egg in sight, it seems it must be something else. I once had one of my gals (the one in my avatar) get chilled (can you believe it!

) during some "cold" weather, nothing like you guys have been getting, it only gets down to about freezing here some nights, and it´s rare, but she got a chill. I kept her up near the house so as to keep an eye on her, as she was shivering and fluffed up and very quiet. I got her to eat something in water with Baytril that I can get here, and after a few days she was on her feet again. I gave her lots of yummy things, and she´s one of the biggest louts down there! Geese are pretty tough, but there are just some things that get them...egg-binding and swallowing trash. I pick up anything plastic etc I find down there that gets brought down the stream, especially after a storm, like you said about.
My hubby has one of those sacks made of woven plastic threads with compost in it...they were busily shredding the plastic threads!! I went and got some wiremesh to cover it to keep them from swallowing it. They´re such terrors!

They really are, we put up a tarp at the wood shed last winter so they would be able to get behind it and out of the wind, well guess what Missy stated pulling the plastic strings out of that, so I had to take it down, she is my worst one always getting into something. Hopefully with a bit more TLC clodhopper will see her girl perk up and have this behind her.

She could have eaten a no-no. Her problem started with (well, I immediately noticed early in the morning) not being able to get on her feet. At one point she did belly scoot into the hutch with the nest in it. Sat there for about an hour and came back out. Later that day I put her back into the straw (not on the nest). So eggbinding suspicion is not too far off I think.

I am really puzzled why she can not get up. She may fall on one side too and it'll take a bit to get upright again. I'll lower the water level soon and see if she attempts to stand up. The room is up to 75F and water is 85F. She is not noticeably distressed when I enter but hissed at my son when he checked on her.
