Sick goose

Oh forgot, one more egg in the nest. Might have three males and four females.
Clodhopper, from what you say I´d give her a good dose of niacin. She doesn´t sound sick as such. If she were egg-bound I´m sure she´d be quite sick by now...temperature, etc.
Does she like a flock mix or chick crumb? Maybe give her a good measure of this with a good dose of niacin (not masses, of course!) and see if she picks up then. Just because the others are ok doesn´t mean that it´s not a niacin problem. Some suffer from it, some don´t.

Thanks so much you guys. I read the postings with great interest. One sign my goose does not have is closed eyes.
I had eggbound chickens before, and they really looked like they were in pain and did close their eyes a lot. The goose looks alert. Once I heard wing flapping and she was a bit closer to the edge of the container.

O.k. we'll try to check out her vent a bit closer. I need a second pair of eyes for that. As far as I can tell, her feathers look normal... she did clean herself a bit after I let the water out of the tub. But she cannot reach her oil gland.

So she doesn't appear to be in pain. That's a relief, so maybe she just needs a niacin boost ?

Her vent is puckered and looks fine to me. We very carefully applied some KY jelly with a syringe. Her vent muscles appear to work fine, no straining, just quick open and close. So we lifted her out on the grass. When encouraged to move, the goose does look like she is totally drunk!

Last year I had one with niacin deficiency. The legs would get wobbly followed by belly landings.

Sure looks like this goose had a more sudden onset. Maybe the cold spill had something to do with that as well.

Anyway, the sure way I got some brewer's yeast into the girl, was by taking a pinch of flakes, wet in water to a paste, open goose's mouth a bit and slowly smear it in. So some surely went down the hatch.

Got sidetracked and did not hit the post bottom yesterday evening.

No egg this morning. Goose ate some lettuce. Will put her on grass again as soon as frost is gone. Hope she "sobered" up.

Well, I noticed her bill was swollen this morning. Took her to the vet. Somehow, she insured her bill(beak). Goose got fluids administered under the skin, a penicillin and a niacin shot. Doctor showed me how to check her keel bone. Poor goose is too skinny down there. Goose is in guarded condition.

So I drove home with a cat that just had surgery for a gash in her tail from a swing door accident and a goose in a large container! I'll be busy...

Thanks for all the support!

Wow you have been busy, How does she seem since getting hydrated and the niacin?Hows her bill? did the vet have any idea how she hurt her bill? Did the vet think that it's a niacin dif too?

Poor Kitty.

She just tried to lift herself up a couple of inches. She really needs to drink and eat to get better. This was not a bird vet but offered to take a look. Monday they have a vet with goose experience. They all drive by my house and see the critters. Injury from fence is possible. The openings are 4x4", large enough to get head through safely. May have shook her beak a bit hard against a post. She likely ate far less for some time plus we had that cold spill. Vet and I figured the niacin shot should help.

Sounds encouraging, about trying to lift herself. Hopefully by tomorrow you'll see a big difference. Have you ever tried feeding fermented feed? I was just wondering if that might spark some interest in eating, just making a small amount for her, I feed my flock of 36 FF. they all love it.
