Sick goose

How do you ferment?
I use Apple Cider Vinegar in hot water since I make up a gallon bucket at a time I use 1/2 cup of ACV to about 1/2 gal of hot water then pour over my feed if you wanted to make up a small amt maybe a cup of feed then put about 1-2 cups of hot water and maybe 2 tablespoons of ACV mixed into the water pour over top of feed stir real good and it will be juicy but by morning the feed will have taken in the water you want it moist but not runny. so it takes a bit of tweaking to get it the way you want it. You can also offer it to her when first made if she hasn't eaten much today just put in small amts of the ACV water mixture till you get it the consistency you like. I make up a bucket then the day i am feeding it I make up another for the next day sometimes I get 2 days ahead.
The feed swells so you don't want o fill your container to the top with feed so it will have room to expand. it actually smells yeasty when fermenting. If you ever what to try it on all your geese I can give you the link that I used I just don't make up 5 gallons at a time.

4 am I hear goose munch on some lettuce. Got up and gave her grain mush smeared on lettuce and dipped in water. She is eating!!!
Well being fed every 15 minutes or so... cat with collar, - well often looks like a giant suction cup up against a wall with a tiny cat hanging out the back and I am not allowed to laugh!

That's awesome. and encouraging. One time when we had one of our dachshunds neutered he wouldn't leave his incision alone and being the cheapees we are we made him a collar out of a butter bowl, poor guy had to even go on a trip with us wearing it, he had to have been humiliated. This was about 20 yrs ago.

So you made her some ff? and she's eating it?

I've been following this thread among others, as I am trying to learn as much about geese as I can. I only got my first geese Dec. of 2012. They were supposed to be a mated pair, and I had the idea of raising my own geese to eeat since, I love Christmas goose, but hadn't had it in years since the price just kept going upwards of 50$ or so.
Well, I had read that geese will adopt any gosling. so in March I bought a pair of white chinese and a brown chinese gander. Lucy and Festus were more than willing to adopt the 3 goslings, but the goslings were terrified and it didn't work, so into the house in a brooder they went. The male WC was the most assertive and just a love. He was always the first one to eat the grass from my hand and other treats. So I named him JC(Just cause I love u) The female Sammy, and Alex the BC. My hubby said, I can see these will never be Christmas geese or any other time. He was so right

So This time I told him to go to Atwoods and pick out some more and we'd try it a different way with Lucy and Festus, to see if we could get those goslings to bond with them. It didn't work again, and this time, Festus picked one up by the leg to bring back to Lucy and injured her. Miss Lydia, that was the one I named Little Britches and the first one I posted about that I lost. Well, when those goslings got a little older we put them in with the other three. They were all living in a big pen in the house that I put painters plastic down and straw on top of that, which as messy as they are had to be changed three times a day.

Little Briches was so lame that they would run over her and she'd be on her back and couldn't get up. They all got to go outside during the warm days to graze and were always brought back in at night. Well, hubby and I went back to Atwoods and picked out two more brown chinese geese to put in with Little Britches, so she wouldn't be lonely, but we did let her go out and graze. Now we had 11 geese.
barnie.gif
2 white chinese(male & female) 3 BC (2 male, not sure on the3rd, but now know she is female) 2pomeranians(male and Female) 1 tufted Roman(was supposed to be female, butI don't think so) 1 emden(female, Little Britches) and Lucy and Festus, who are both of indeterminate breeding, although Festus is supposed to be 1/2 pilgrim and so is Lucy.
I fell in love with all my geese. I had no idea what intelligent birds they are. I will never eat another one. Not even store bought. Finally it got to be to much for me to clean clean clean and the house was starting to smell. so they all moved outside except Little Britches and the two little ones we had bought to keep her company. I would bath them every night and wrap Little Britches in a warm towel and sit in the rocking recliner and feed her grass until she'd fall asleep then I'd put her back in the brooder.with the other two. Now u know how she became my baby and how heart wretching it was to lose her.
I ended up losing DewDrop, the lat one I posted about. I just couldn't find a vet to look at her at th time. Now that I lost her I've found 3 about 100 miles from here, but well worth the drive if it's something I can't figure out. I lost DewDrop, not from the illness, but from the penicillin. She was allergic. She never went into total anaphylactic
shock, but she was allergic enough that it totally swelled her breat

hing passages were she had to labor to breathe.

I still haven't found the Fowl cholera vaccine for geese and ducks. they make it in canada and a lot of the other countrys including India. I need to find someone from canada on here and see if they can help me.

I have two female geese in quarantine that are way ready to come out and the boys are eager to meet them, but I just hate letting them out w/o being vaccinated. But I'll have to trust God's will and let them out if I can't get some pretty soon, or just give the chicken and turkey vaccine.

I realize this is getting really long so I'll just ask one question. What is the niacin in geese. How important is it to supplement and what does it do for them and what syptoms do they show if they have a deficiency? Guess that was more than one question

Thank you for sharing your story, very sweet and touching, Maybe go to the Canada thread and ask? and So sorry for the loss of your babies.

Niacin deficiency starts out most of the time with weakness in the legs, then can go to complete lameness if not treated asap. it can also cause neurological problems as well, most of the time it's noticed when they are very young sometimes even when someone gets them from the feed store they can already being showing symptoms of not being able to walk well not being able to keep up being stepped on because they can get out of the way, it may just be 1 duckling or gosling among all the rest too, but since most of us can't get duckling feed we have to feed what chickens are fed and their just isn't enough niacin in chick feed to give them what they need, I haven't ever had a problem with any of my duckling I don't really know why other than they are raised by mamas which means they are out on the ground sooner and I use Purina Flock raiser as feed from hatch till end of their lives. which is formulated for all breeds of poultry I only used Brewers yeast 1 time and that was when we had a new hatched duckling inside because mama rejected him, so I used caution and gave him the brewers yeast till he was 12 weeks old. Did you find out if you can use the chicken /turkey vaccine on geese? I wonder if you contacted John Metzer he could tell you anything about the vaccine. He's a member of BYC so you can probably PM him

Goose is eating mush and drinking. She will change her position occasionally. Can stand up about halfway now. Her bill is more swollen today. Did some more reading on this forum about penicillin shots, I better keep the vet appointment for today, forgot to ask if additional shots are necessary...
Goose is out in the sun room during the day, well not like we have sun, but anyway, she can scoot around a bit, hear the others better and has natural light. We were frost free long enough now for the hoses to work and for the rest of the geese to have their pool back. ;)

Cat seems to have navigation problems with that silly collar on. She mostly freezes in place until I move her on a pillow.

Poor Kitty. Awesome about your goose, making strides which is encouraging. So she goes back to the vet today? Happy to hear she is eating and drinking too. Top of bill or bottom? I remember someone posting last year about their gander having a stick lodged under it's tongue which caused swelling that why I was asking top or bottom.

Goose got another penicillin shot and a bit of fluids since goose is not walking yet. Only had to pay $20 this time. Needs another penicillin shot Wednesday and see the first vet again. Vet thinks she likely got a hold of a wire that cut her right lower jaw.

We first noticed two little bumps with an indent in between. Next day the indent appeared as a very narrow and shallow cut up to the tooth line. I first suspected a lodged wood splinter at that time, but was difficult to tell, this is not a tame goose. The bill slowly started to swell and is now about 1/4" wider on that side.

I had her on grass for a while this afternoon. She got to flap her wings and was getting upright many times only to flop over on her side, then she uses her bill and feet to right herself. Ouch!

She is spending another night in the house and inside her container. Weather allowing, she'll get to flap and bathe again tomorrow. Seems, I can encourage her to eat a few bites at a time and she also will swish her bill in the water bowl after each bite.

The cat was resting inside the litter box...with the cone firmly planted onto the side of the box...poor thing...
