In the Brooder
I have a sick Australorp hen (her name is Nico), who just doesn't seem to be getting better.
About three weeks ago, we noticed that she was having trouble swallowing and seemed to have a lot of mucus in her mouth. Shortly after that she became lethargic and stopped eating and drinking.
So, for about two and a half weeks, We've been giving her about 1/4 cc of Tylan 50 orally twice a day and force feeding her 3 times a day. (We're giving her a liquid smoothie of mostly scrambled egg, corn, water, and various greens, spinach, brocolli, cabbage, etc.)
She' doesn't seem to be getting any worse, but she doesn't seem to be getting better either.
She's still pretty lethargic (always the first to bed at night, and last out in the morning), not eating or drinking, and not cleaning herself. She walks around with the other chickens, and sometimes pecks at food half-heartedly when the other girls are eating, but never actually eats.
She doesn't poo as much as a normal chicken, and when she does its mostly or all liquid, and very green. (But her diet has been green and all liquid, so I think that's why)
The mucus in her mouth has definitely gotten better, but there's still a little in her mouth usually, and she still has trouble swallowing.
The other chickens treat her normally, and no one else is sick.
She doesn't seem to be in pain, but it's so hard to tell with chickens.
She's such a trooper, even though I know the force feeding must be very uncomfortable for her.
My mom won't pay for a trip to a vet, and I don't think they can do much more for her than I can.
Does anyone know what might be wrong with her? Am I doing the right thing to treat her?
I love her so much, and can't stand the thought of her being so miserable.
If anyone can offer any suggestions, I would be very grateful. Thank you.
