This is my silkie Stella. Just yesterday she started displaying signs of illness, including:
She is sitting/laying down with her tail pressed to the ground.
Not moving, only a little hobbling here and there.
Breathing with beak open. (It is not hot here in GA, it's 54-60 degrees)
She won't interact with Evie, who is her roommate, or me.
She seems unstable on her feet.

I brought her into the garage for examination and nothing seems wrong, except she can't (or won't) stand. Outside she behaves the same way. She will eat and drink. She doesn't feel any thinner then how she was 2 days ago. She hasn't been pooping very often, but when she does, it is normal. She is around 8 months old. She hasn't started laying yet. I have her quarantined from the rest of the flock. Yesterday I gave her some electrolytes, but I don't think it made a difference. I clean her coop regularly. I hope it isn't marek's...... Does anyone have an idea what it is? Pls. help!!!!!!!!!!!!!

how did her vent look ? any swollen abdomen ?? How old is she exactly ? Could you please tell me that she is already a layer and what is her consistency ?

I'm not trying to diagnose but I have an Ameracauna that suddenly went completely listless and at the time, she hadn't laid an egg yet. She would sit or stand with head/tail down and not move.

I picked her up and got no reaction from her which was really concerning since I don't handle my chickens. She just collapsed in my arms when I picked her up, not even an attempt to squawk. I took her inside for the night and noticed she made no sounds whatsoever and wouldn't walk or stand so I gave her a little food and water with electrolytes and honestly didn't think she would make it through the night based on her behavior. I too fully inspected her and found nothing and her weight was fine.

The next morning she had perked up a bit and as the day went on, she was back to her old self so I put her back with the flock. I also noticed she had only pooped like twice overnight and one was runny and one was solid. The very next day she laid her first egg so I came to the conclusion, she was not feeling well as the egg traveled on it's way out or maybe it got stuck for a couple days?

Anyway, she's totally fine and been a good layer ever since.

I'm sorry Stella is not doing well and hoping it is something benign like getting ready to lay that first egg! Keep giving the electrolytes, feed and keep her comfy and hopefully she will perk up!

i'm honestly thinking she is either in pain due an egg that will follow soon , some hens can really get ill or weird the day before they lay the first egg , if no other symptoms occur I d advise you to get a check on her by a vet , best for a bloodsample because I am sorry to say this but Since no actual visible or known sympoms are listed its hard to say from upon a distance what could in fact be the right case here , keep a close eye on her and just for all safety keep her seperate , I hope she will be fine and in that case please share , kind regards

I took her to the vet yesterday. The vet said that Stella has an egg lodged between her legs which causes her to walk awkwardly. The vet said I could put her back into the coop with Evie. She should drop an egg any day now!

Hi @4 Georgia Hens I'm sorry you're girl is not doing well.

Did the vet take an x-ray?
Is there any notable swelling/bloat or feeling of fluid in the abdomen?

Having an egg lodged between the legs? This sounds like an internal laying/reproductive disorder - anytime there is an egg "stuck" that is not good. You can try soaking her in a warm epsom salts bath to see if this will help get things moving. Provide her with vitamins in her water and see that she is drinking well. Make sure she has a source of calcium (oyster shell freed choice). Watch to see that her crop is emptying overnight.

Let us know how she is doing.

Hey hi ...
My all best wishes with your girl She'll be fine I'm sure and will give you a beautiful egg soon don't worry :hugs
Just do as vet recommended ..
Hoping for best:fl
