Sick hen?

I’ve had chickens for a little over 6 months. This is the first time one has ever acted weird. We went out to the coop and one of our isa Browns was just laying there. Not running around like usual. And her tail feathers are down when usually they are up. I’m not sure what to do or what could be wrong.

Check for sour crop by feeling her neck for a hard ball or lumpy chunks. If that comes up empty, check her vent for any abnormalities. Is she panting or holding her wings away from her body? Make sure she gets plenty of water. If you need to, make some electrolyte water to get her hydrated. A sick hen always needs to be very hydrated.

Her vent looks fine. She’s not panting or holding her wings away from her body. Her crop felt like it could be a little lumpy but I’m not 100% sure how it normally feels. She’s not interested in food but she’s still drinking.

I’m going to run to tractor supply to get some electrolytes for the water. Is there a certain kind to get? And is it okay for all of the hens to drink it with it in the water?

A filled crop will be hard and protruding, whereas a normal one would be swishy and soft. Try getting her to eat some vitamins. See if she can eat yogurt or applesauce. If you can get her to eat some hard-boiled eggs, that would be great.

I don't know of any specific electrolytes to buy. It's fine to let her drink it in her water.
