Sick of chick waterers full of shavings, AAHHHHHHH!!!!!!

I use stepping stones to elevate the waterers and feeders. To help more on the feeders I place them in glass pie plates. This does not solve the problem, but they dont waste as much feed. Labor of love is cheap, so you got to love it.

I have taken two short logs, about 13 inches high, and put their water dispensers on top of them. The pullets hop up onto the logs and drink their water. I have been doing this for about two weeks now. NO MORE SHAVINGS in thier water. Ever. Problem solved. When they were in the brooder I would just raise them slowly as the pullets got taller.

Hope this helps.

They do drink a lot of water.

Then, there is also THIS (<---Klick) which just so happens to be advertised right here on BYC.

I tried the plywood tactic with my Blue Orpingtons (adults) They are terrible about filling it with dirt and of course you get a mucky, muddy, mess! YUCK! The plywood didn't help

It's the one thing I absolutely HATE about my chickens!

We use rabbit waterers. I found a 1/2 gallon one that I change every day, it hangs on the side of their coop. I introduced it when they were tiny and as soon as they saw it they began pecking it and immediately got the hang of it. I also used it on my laying flock (when they were here).

The shavings in the waterer was driving me insane...but the rabbit waterers completely eliminated the problem!

I got awfully sick of that too. I had mine in a big cardboard box for a brooder in the garage until they somehow piled the shavings into the box, wicked out the water, and ruined the box. I tried hanging it with a little better results. They somehow managed to repeat this about 4 times (with shavings in water in between), so I cut a horizontal hole in the side of the box with just enough room for one side of the waterer to peek through. It was a bit elevated too. There was LESS shavings in there, and since they only had access to one side they weren't able to totally plug it up.
They are cute, sweet little pains-in-the-fanny, aren't they?

I use a rabbit waterer too, and it is so much better! With the last batch of chicks I kept, they kept knocking over the water or piling shavings in it (no matter how I tried to stack it) and it got so nasty all the time with the wet bedding, plus they were always out of water. This time I gave them the rabbit waterer right from the start, and there has been no issue at all. Everything is always clean and dry, and the chicks seem to love pecking at it! I'm also looking forward to when they get bigger--no poop in the water to clean out. My last flock of chickens kept making their water disgusting within an hour after I would change it...
