Sick Pea Chick Died - Going to Vet School For Necropsy - Will Post Results

Did you have any that died from having blackhead?

Yes, two turkey poults last summer and two peachicks this summer. All four had necropsies that were positive for blackhead.

But I also have survivors that were treated and doing just fine... Two peas and three turkeys from last year and six peachicks and two turkeys from this year.

Awwwwwwwwww. I'm so sad to hear that. So sorry for your losses. Where do you think the blackhead came from?

I will have to contact the State Vet that comes over to do my NPIP re-certification every year to see if there are any outbreaks of blackhead in my area. My re-cert is in January 2013.

I checked on her this morning and she had passed. I am so sad. She was fine last night. I have her body on ice. I want to open her up to check her liver. I will call the state vet to see what to do.

Thank you everyone for all of your help. I will keep everyone posted on necropsy results.

so sorry for your loss her little system probably could not take all the medications when she was down.

I called the State Vet that does my annual NPIP re-certification and he directed me to our State Lab. I spoke with the Dr. over the lab and he told me that they could do a necropsy but I would have to bring my pea to the lab and the lab is 3 1/2 hours away. I told him about the events leading from Sunday up to this morning. He said that if it is Blackhead, the liver will look like it has bullets all over it. He told me that I should contact the LSU Vet School and ask them to do the necropsy. I am only 1 hour from LSU. I called LSU Vet School and they told me that they can do the necropsy. They asked if I could bring my pea in right now but I couldn' t because I'm at work. I asked them were they open after 5:00 PM. She said yes. She said that the drop off department is open 24/7. I can bring my pea after hours and someone will take it. She said that cost is $59.00 which is not bad at all.

So, I will drive home from work (30 minutes away) and get my baby and put her in an ice chest. She is wrapped up and is cooling in my outside fridge in my garage. I made sure to do this before I left because I knew that I had to have a necropsy performed on her. I will take her body to LSU Vet School today (1 hour away) after work. She said they will have the results back to me as soon as they can. She said they will test ALL organs for EVERYTHING.

As soon as I have the results, I will post so that everyone will know what was wrong with my baby. We will then know for sure EXACTLY what she had. Maybe this will help the next person in the event the same symptoms happen to their pea. I know it will help me out, so that I will know what exact meds to keep on hand in the event this happens again.
