Sick Pea Chick Died - Going to Vet School For Necropsy - Will Post Results

The "avian" vet's office (in my area) called me back. They said that they cannot dispense the med without seeing the patient, which I already knew that. An initial visit would be about $100.00 not including the meds, so it would be more. I asked if they did a poop exam and she said yes. I asked her if they did a poop exam, why would I need to bring in the pea because she can't determine anything from looking at the pea and the pea can't tell her what is hurting and it's not as if she will have to do a mouth swab and she has never saw my pea before so she won't be able to determine what is a "normal" appearance to an "abnormal" appearance because my pea LOOKS normal on the outside. It would probably soar across the entire room during the entire visit and then I would look like a dummy saying that my pea is half dead :/. I think I stumped them with that question. I really didn't get a good answer. Anyway, she was rambling off about getting this med and getting this med. I asked the lady has the vet actually saw a pea before and she had to put me on hold to ask the vet. She came back and the vet said "NO", she has not seen or diagnosed a PEA before. In my mind, I was like "HUH?" "WHAT?". Then why are we having this conversation and why are you trying to get me to bring my pea in if you have NEVER EVER EVERY in your life saw a pea before. I politely thanked them and hung up. I will say this again - Now why would you have me come in to see you AND bring my pea when you have NEVER EVER in your life or in your practice saw a PEA FOWL BEFORE??????? :smack

I know it's frustrating and expensive, but if they have seen turkeys, they would probably be okay with peafowl. But if they are like the first vet that I went to see, who had never seen either, it could be a frustrating experience. Keep looking for one that you would feel comfortable going to.

What strength of metronidazole powder are we talking about? I can try to figure it out...

Amoxi and Metronidazole are totally different. The metronidazole is actually the same thing that they give to recovering alcoholics... if they drink anything alcoholic (or even use mouth wash) it makes them violently ill. Nasty stuff... I was on it for a while and HATED it. Even the alcohol in dish detergent made me sick. So keep anything with alcohol away from the chick if you use the stuff :p

As for where blackhead could have come from? It would just take one contaminated earthworm... or one song bird that ate a worm somewhere else and pooped while flying over. One wild turkey wandering through... I just hope if that's it, that it remains an isolated case.

No they have not seen turkeys. They have only seen cats and dogs. No poultry AT ALL. This is not my regular avian vet. This is another office. I think I just better stick to my vet that is 1 1/2 hours away. :/
